Sinkins accidentally gave viewers an image of aging that looked stylish rather than diminished.
Almost Five Decades of Dance
The viral videos captured only seconds of Sinkins' life.
His career behind those seconds was much longer.
According to Xinhua, he began dancing at seven, later competed professionally and eventually became both a coach and judge.
Latvia's official Sport Dance Federation lists him as both a judge and coach associated with the Vecrīga club, while the WDSF database documents an extensive record of international adjudicating assignments.
His judging record stretches across events in countries including Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Poland, Austria, Uzbekistan, Malaysia and China.
That experience matters because DanceSport judging is not simply about deciding which couple “looks best.”
Competitive ballroom dancing combines technical execution with performance.
Judges must assess several couples simultaneously, often during fast-moving rounds where every pair is trying to create a memorable impression in limited time.
They watch posture, timing, balance, coordination, musical interpretation, partnership and overall presentation.
And the judge must make those decisions while remaining composed.
One of Sinkins' fellow judges in Chengdu, China's Che Yao, told Xinhua that elegance in an adjudicator is closely linked to professionalism.
For her, that includes focus, restraint and respect.
A judge needs focus to identify quality quickly, restraint to remain calm regardless of what happens on the floor and respect for competitors, colleagues and the event itself.
Seen from that perspective, Sinkins' viral appearance was not completely separate from his profession.
The traits viewers admired—posture, restraint, controlled movement, attention and presentation—were the same qualities that decades in DanceSport had trained into him.
The internet had effectively noticed the physical language of his profession.
DanceSport Is About More Than Dance Steps
Sinkins also used the unexpected attention to talk about the sport itself.
China Daily reported that he described DanceSport as something that goes beyond conventional physical competition. To him, it combines sport with beauty, partnership and personal presentation.
A successful dancer cannot think only about technical steps.
Costume, grooming, posture, expression, partnership and the visual impression of movement all matter.
That may help explain why a DanceSport judge could become visually compelling without actually performing.
After decades in that world, presentation no longer begins only when music starts.
It becomes habitual.
The way a dancer walks into a room can carry traces of training.
The way someone stands while waiting can reveal years of posture correction.
The placement of shoulders, the position of the head and even the rhythm of ordinary steps can look different.
That is essentially what viewers saw in Sinkins.
The competition ended when dancers left the floor.
His training did not.
An Unexpected Ambassador for Dance
There was another result of Sinkins' sudden popularity that he appeared to appreciate much more than personal attention.
People who may never previously have cared about competitive DanceSport were suddenly talking about it.
The viral judge became an accidental advertisement for the sport.
Xinhua reported that Sinkins hoped the attention could encourage more people to become interested in DanceSport and experience it themselves.
That was also the message from Che Yao.
