A Century of Honor: Remembering Roy Drinkard, the Oldest Living U.S. Marine

A Historic Milestone and Final Farewell

As the decades passed, Drinkard accumulated rare distinctions. He lived to witness history unfold across more than a century, residing in "the Borkenau," a historic 1909 Cullman home he purchased in 1949. Even into his centenarian years, his mind remained sharp; he famously led the Pledge of Allegiance at a major public event in Cullman in 2021 and celebrated his 105th and 106th birthdays surrounded by state dignitaries, family, and grateful citizens.

When he passed away on August 23, 2026, tributes poured in from across the United States. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey invoked the iconic Marines' Hymn, noting that a pillar of the state had gone to "guard the streets of Heaven". His full military funeral honors at the Tom Drake Coliseum in Hanceville, Alabama, complete with representatives from the Marine Corps, the Marine Band ("The President's Own"), and the U.S. Army's Old Guard, reflected the profound magnitude of his life.
