The first crack was so loud it seemed to split the luxury hospital suite in half. White plaster exploded across the polished floor as the ten-year-old boy swung a heavy dark stone straight into the old man’s enormous leg cast, sending dust and broken chunks flying over the sheets. The heart monitor beeped faster. The doctors jolted back in shock. The wealthy old man, propped up in a premium hospital bed beside the skyline window, grabbed the bedrails with both hands and shouted, “What did you do?!” But the boy didn’t flinch. Dressed in worn, cheap clothes, with both hands still gripping the stone, he stared at the cast with a calm so cold it unsettled everyone in the room.

“It wasn’t healing,” he said. Silence slammed down instantly. Even the machine hum suddenly felt too loud. The male doctor looked from the boy to the cast, confused, while the female doctor’s face tightened with alarm. Then a thin fracture line began spreading deeper across the plaster. The boy lifted the stone again—not wildly, not like a child throwing a tantrum, but with eerie precision. The old man’s voice cracked with panic. “Stop!” But the boy brought it down again. Another violent smash. Another jagged break. A large section of the cast broke loose and crashed to the floor. Both doctors froze. Beneath the shattered plaster, the old man’s exposed toes were visible now—and they looked completely healthy.

Clean. Pink. Not swollen. Not injured. Not the foot of a man who was supposed to be unable to move. The female doctor slowly covered her mouth. The boy pointed directly at the exposed foot and said in a low voice, “Move them.” No one breathed. For one long second, nothing happened. Then suddenly—one toe twitched. The female doctor gasped. The male doctor stepped closer, eyes widening in disbelief. Sweat rolled down the old man’s temple. The boy took one step toward the bed, his gaze never leaving the old man’s face. “So why were you pretending?” he asked. The room seemed to tilt under the weight of that question. The old man’s lips parted, but no answer came. Then the male doctor noticed something lodged inside the torn cast lining—a hidden plastic packet, taped deep beneath the padding. His hands trembled as he slowly pulled one corner free. Inside the sealed packet was a folded paper.
