A Neighborhood Decides to Give Something Back
As December approached, the residents of Hallsley, a neighborhood in Midlothian, Virginia, began thinking about how they could express their appreciation for Anthony.
The holiday season traditionally brings people together. Neighbors exchange gifts, families gather around dinner tables, and communities find ways to celebrate the people who make their lives better.
But Christmas in 2020 was different.
Many families were still navigating restrictions, health concerns, and the emotional strain of a year that had changed almost everything about their daily lives. The usual celebrations were more complicated, and the simple pleasure of gathering with friends was no longer something everyone could take for granted.
Against that backdrop, a group of residents decided that one person deserved a special thank-you.
According to reporting by CBS News and Richmond television station WTVR, the idea was spearheaded by neighborhood resident Patty Friedman, who had moved to Hallsley during the pandemic. The transition had been lonely, and Anthony's friendly greetings had helped her feel welcome in a place where she was still trying to establish connections.
Friedman explained that his regular visits had become a bright spot in her day. After discussing the idea with other residents, she discovered that many of them felt the same way.
Anthony had made an impression on far more people than he probably realized.
Some residents appreciated his cheerful attitude. Others remembered how consistently he delivered packages despite the extraordinary demands of the pandemic. For families receiving essential supplies, his dependable service had become an important part of their routines.
The neighborhood's gratitude was not based on a single remarkable incident. It had grown out of months of ordinary interactions that, taken together, meant a great deal.
Friedman and her neighbors began organizing a surprise celebration along Anthony's delivery route. They wanted to make sure he would encounter the entire community's appreciation at once.
The plan required coordination. Residents needed to know when to gather, where to position themselves, and how to create a memorable welcome without disrupting the delivery route.
More importantly, they wanted Anthony to have no idea what was coming.
The residents contacted his supervisors, who also supported the effort. The celebration would include a special gift, signs, cheers, and a long line of vehicles filled with people eager to thank the man who had brought so much warmth into their lives.
What started as one resident's desire to say thank you quickly became a community-wide expression of affection.
By the time December 15 arrived, the neighborhood was ready.
December 15, 2020: The Surprise He Never Expected
On that December day, Anthony began his route as he normally would.
There was work to do, packages to deliver, and a schedule to follow. Nothing about the beginning of his day suggested that he was about to experience one of the most emotional moments of his career.
Then he approached Hallsley.
Instead of seeing the familiar streets as usual, he encountered a remarkable scene. More than 100 residents had gathered, with over 75 cars lining the road. Other people arrived on foot or on bicycles, and children stood alongside adults, holding signs prepared especially for him.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement.
People waved their arms, cheered, honked their horns, and called out his name. Some held up messages of gratitude, while others simply smiled and applauded as the brown UPS truck approached.
It was not a gathering for a celebrity or a public official. It was a celebration for a man who had been driving the same neighborhood streets and delivering packages.
And the people cheering were the very families he had served.
According to WTVR's December 18, 2020, report, the residents had coordinated the event so that Anthony would encounter the entire surprise as he entered the neighborhood. His supervisors were present as well and arranged to give him a token of appreciation.
At first, Anthony was confused.
He had not expected such a large crowd, and it took a moment for him to understand why everyone had gathered. He was accustomed to greeting residents, not being greeted by an entire street full of people.
As he slowly made his way forward, the realization began to sink in.
This was all for him.
The people were not simply cheering at a passing truck. They were celebrating his work, his kindness, and the positive presence he had maintained during a period when so many people were struggling.
The scene was overwhelming precisely because it was so unexpected.
