Video calls.

Artificial intelligence.

All of those developments occurred during one lifetime.

Yet perhaps the most meaningful transformation was the one she experienced personally.

A Black girl growing up on a Delaware farm during segregation became a college graduate and a teacher.

She built a career.

She raised a family.

She traveled.

She retired.

And then she continued building a life long after her professional career had ended.

Retirement Didn't Mean Sitting Still

For many people, retirement represents the end of a structured daily routine.

For Browne, it appears to have been the beginning of another chapter.

After retiring in 1977, she traveled extensively.

She visited Alaska and Hawaii, as well as international destinations including Spain, Portugal, and Brazil.

Hawaii is reportedly her favorite destination.

She has described it simply as beautiful.

There is something fitting about that.

After spending decades teaching children in Delaware, Browne eventually had the opportunity to see parts of the world that the young girl on the farm could probably never have imagined visiting.

Travel also reflects another feature of her personality:

Curiosity.

She did not seem to regard aging as a reason to stop experiencing new things.

Instead, she continued to explore.

Keeping the Mind Busy

Browne's routine isn't only physical.

She also keeps her mind active.

She enjoys reading, including romance novels, and she likes puzzles and word games.

Her family has described her as organized and engaged with the many activities in her life.

She uses a calendar to keep track of her schedule.

She attends church.

She socializes at the senior center.

She maintains connections with her sorority.

She stays involved with family and community activities.

That combination of physical movement and mental engagement is important because healthy aging is not only about muscles and joints.

The brain needs stimulation too.

The National Institute on Aging notes that social engagement and meaningful activities can support cognitive health, while social isolation and loneliness are associated with a range of health risks among older adults.

Browne's lifestyle happens to contain many of those elements.

She reads.

She solves puzzles.

She exercises.

She attends group activities.

She participates in religious and community life.

She maintains family connections.

She travels.

None of these activities can guarantee exceptional longevity.

But together, they form a lifestyle centered on participation rather than withdrawal.

Her Diet Is Surprisingly Simple

Browne's approach to food is also relatively straightforward.

According to interviews, she avoids fried foods, alcohol, and excessive sugar.

She enjoys fruit and eats an apple regularly.

Her meals are not based on an elaborate "longevity diet."

There are no expensive supplements at the center of her story.

No exotic superfoods.

No complicated fasting protocol.

She simply tries to make choices she believes are good for her health.

And then there is one exception.

Her famous 7UP pound cake.

She makes it for family gatherings and special occasions.

That detail may be one of the most charming parts of the story.

A woman known for avoiding excessive sugar still has room in her life for a beloved family dessert.

It is a reminder that healthy living does not necessarily have to mean eliminating every pleasure.

Moderation can be more realistic than perfection.

At 108, according to her daughter, Browne takes one medication for blood pressure control, and longevity also appears to run in her family: one of her sisters reportedly lived to 103.

That family history is another reminder that longevity is complicated.

Lifestyle matters, but biology matters too.
