The U.S. mission appears to have achieved an important tactical objective: clearing key transit routes and creating conditions for commercial traffic to resume.
U.S. Central Command publicly confirmed that American forces had undertaken mine-clearance operations and later said Iranian mines had been cleared from transit routes.
The broader economic picture has also begun to improve as traffic through the strait recovers. In July, the EIA reported that shipping traffic had increased after a June agreement between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the conflict and reopening Hormuz.
But that does not mean the strategic problem has disappeared.
Reuters reported in September that uncertainty over actual oil flows through Hormuz remained substantial, with estimates varying dramatically depending on the source and with some tankers disabling tracking systems.
At the same time, regional maritime threats have expanded beyond mines.
The capture of a U.S. autonomous underwater vehicle by Iranian forces in September demonstrated that unmanned underwater technology itself has become part of the strategic contest. Reuters reported that the captured Dive-LD system was designed for missions including mine countermeasures, seabed mapping and underwater inspection.
That episode illustrates the technological race now unfolding beneath the surface.
The same autonomous systems that allow the United States to search for mines can also become intelligence targets for an adversary.
An Invisible Shield
The most important military operations are not always the ones that produce the loudest explosions.
Sometimes they are the operations that prevent an explosion from happening.
For four months, American divers reportedly worked through darkness beneath one of the world's most strategically important waterways. They operated alongside robotic boats and underwater vehicles, searching for explosives that could have threatened ships carrying energy supplies to global markets.
The mission was slow.
It was technically demanding.
And it was extraordinarily dangerous.
The image of a lone diver descending toward a suspected mine captures something that satellite images and global oil statistics cannot: the human cost hidden behind the concept of maritime security.
Above the diver, the global economy continued to function.
Tankers waited.
Ports prepared.

Governments calculated risk.
And beneath the surface, someone was working to make the water safe enough for those ships to move again.
That is the paradox of mine warfare.
The objective is almost invisible when it succeeds.
If the mine is found and destroyed, nothing happens.
The ship sails through.
The cargo arrives.
The market continues.
The world barely notices.
But if the mine is missed, everything changes.
That is why the reported U.S. operation in the Strait of Hormuz matters far beyond the immediate military confrontation with Iran. It demonstrates how modern naval warfare is increasingly fought through a combination of robotics, sensors, special operations and painstaking human intervention.
It also shows why geography still matters in an age of advanced technology.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a narrow passage connecting an enormous energy-producing region with the rest of the world. Its strategic importance cannot be replaced simply by declaring another route open.
And as long as that remains true, the underwater battle for Hormuz will continue to matter.
The divers may eventually leave.
The robotic vessels may be withdrawn.
The sonar screens may go dark.
But the strategic contest beneath the surface will remain.
Because in Hormuz, the greatest threat is often the one nobody can see.
And sometimes, the invisible shield protecting global commerce is simply a diver, working in darkness, approaching a mine.
