Early reports described an asking price of around $40 million, which explains why some versions of the John story referred to Pitt's “$40 million estate.”
The final sale price, however, was lower.
Architectural Digest subsequently reported that oil heiress and philanthropist Aileen Getty purchased the compound for $33 million.
Entertainment Tonight also reported the $33 million transaction and described the property as a compound made up of multiple parcels and homes.
This distinction is useful because the original PEOPLE story was published during the period when reports around the property were still frequently referencing the roughly $40 million figure.
The final documented transaction was approximately $33 million.
Even at that lower number, the sale represented an enormous increase from the roughly $1.7 million Pitt paid Peterson for the original house in 1994, although that comparison does not account for all of the additional parcels Pitt purchased or the money invested in expanding and improving the estate.
According to Architectural Digest, Pitt had spent roughly $5 million in total acquiring the properties that made up the compound.

From a celebrity-property perspective, there is plenty about the Los Feliz estate that could have attracted attention.
It belonged to one of Hollywood's most famous actors.
