Rick and Evelyn Were the Heart of It
Fraser may have supplied much of the physical energy, but The Mummy would not have become the same cultural phenomenon without Rachel Weisz.
Her Evelyn Carnahan was not simply Rick’s love interest.
She was intelligent, ambitious, occasionally clumsy and deeply fascinated by history. Rick knew how to survive a gunfight; Evelyn understood the ancient world that had suddenly come back to life around them.
Their personalities were different enough to create comedy but complementary enough to make the partnership convincing.
Their relationship also developed organically.
The first film allowed them to argue, flirt, rescue each other and gradually become a team. By The Mummy Returns in 2001, Rick and Evelyn were married and raising their son, Alex.
The sequel expanded the scale of the mythology while preserving the family dynamic that audiences had embraced.
But when the franchise returned in 2008 with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Weisz did not reprise the role. Maria Bello played Evelyn instead.
Fraser returned as Rick, but the original Fraser-Weisz pairing had effectively ended after The Mummy Returns.
Until now.
Their upcoming reunion means the new film can restore a dynamic that has been absent from the franchise for more than two decades.
Variety reported in 2026 that Fraser and Weisz will reprise Rick and Evelyn in the upcoming installment. Universal’s schedule now places the film in theaters on October 15, 2027.
That makes the project more than another attempt to revive a recognizable Hollywood property.
It is a genuine reunion.
Fraser’s Return Means More After Everything That Happened
There is another reason seeing Fraser prepare for Rick O’Connell again carries emotional significance.
The action movies that helped make him famous also took a serious physical toll.
In a widely discussed 2018 interview with GQ, Fraser described the accumulated damage caused by years of physically demanding filmmaking. By the time he made The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008, he said he was relying heavily on ice packs and physical supports simply to keep working.
Over the following years, Fraser underwent multiple medical procedures.
He described undergoing back surgery, a partial knee replacement and treatment involving his vocal cords, among other procedures. He told GQ that he spent years moving in and out of hospitals.
That history changes how his return to action should be viewed.
Fraser does not need to recreate his 30-year-old body to become Rick O’Connell again.
In fact, trying to pretend that no time has passed would arguably miss what makes the reunion interesting.
Rick has aged because Fraser has aged.
Evelyn has aged because Weisz has aged.
The audience that watched them in 1999 has aged too.
There is an opportunity here to make that passage of time part of the adventure rather than something the movie attempts to hide.
A 57-year-old Rick O’Connell does not have to move exactly like the Rick who first walked into the Cairo prison decades ago.
He only has to feel like Rick.
The grin.
The timing.
The irritation when something supernatural appears.
The confidence immediately followed by the realization that the situation is considerably worse than expected.
That is the character fans remember.
