Does Rick still complain before inevitably following her into danger?
The filmmakers have not publicly revealed the central plot, and that secrecy should be respected. But the basic premise of watching an older Rick and Evelyn confront another impossible adventure already provides a compelling foundation.
And the directing team suggests that Universal is not simply attempting to recreate Stephen Sommers’ movies frame for frame.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have experience combining genre filmmaking with humor, suspense and self-awareness through projects including Ready or Not and entries in the modern Scream series.
The challenge will be finding the right balance.
Because Fraser himself has already explained what he believes made The Mummy special.
The Secret Ingredient Was Fun
When discussing the franchise in 2022, Fraser reflected on why the 2017 Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise did not connect with audiences in the same way.
His explanation was revealing.
Fraser argued that the ingredient his version possessed was “fun.”
That observation gets to the heart of the franchise.
The 1999 Mummy could be scary.
Imhotep was dangerous. Characters died. Ancient curses had consequences.
But the movie was ultimately designed as a thrill ride.
The horror existed alongside romance, jokes, chases, gunfights, supernatural spectacle and old-fashioned adventure.
The audience was supposed to be excited rather than exhausted.
That tone is difficult to manufacture.
Too much comedy and the danger disappears.
Too much darkness and The Mummy stops feeling like The Mummy.
The original films found their identity somewhere between those extremes, and Fraser was often the person holding everything together.
His performance could move between action, romance and slapstick without making the transitions feel unnatural.
That remains one of the strongest reasons for bringing him back.
This Is Not Just Nostalgia
Hollywood has spent years revisiting successful franchises.
Sometimes those revivals work because audiences genuinely want to see beloved characters again. Sometimes they feel like attempts to monetize familiar names.
The new Mummy will eventually have to prove which kind of revival it is.
For now, however, there are reasons for cautious optimism.
The original stars are returning.
Fraser has publicly expressed enthusiasm.
Weisz is back as Evelyn.
Radio Silence is directing.
And Universal has committed to a theatrical release date of October 15, 2027.
Perhaps most importantly, Fraser appears to understand that audiences are not merely asking for another movie featuring a mummy.
They are asking for the particular combination of characters, humor and adventure that made the earlier films memorable.
Fraser told Fallon that the team intends to give audiences what they have been asking for over the past two decades.
That does not mean the new film should pretend it is still 1999.
