The Wedding Day
On August 6, 2016, Jeni Stepien married Paul Maenner at St. Anselm Church in Swissvale, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.
The location carried its own family significance. Reports at the time noted that it was the same church where Jeni's parents had married.
Now another generation of the family was preparing to make its vows there.
Jeni wore her wedding dress.
Friends and relatives gathered.
Paul waited for her.
And beside the bride stood Arthur “Tom” Thomas.
Then they began walking.
To the guests watching them, it was already an emotional sight.
But behind the simple image of a bride walking arm-in-arm with an older man was an extraordinary chain of events stretching back ten years.
A father had died.
His family had chosen organ donation.
A critically ill stranger had received his heart.
Two families had stayed connected.

And now the recipient of Michael Stepien's heart was escorting Michael's daughter toward the altar.

At the reception, he also joined Jeni for a father-daughter dance.

Eventually, Thomas handed Jeni over to her mother, allowing another part of the family to share the moment.
