The $22 Million Question
As the story has spread online, one part has sometimes been oversimplified.
The development has widely been described as a roughly $22 million project, but that does not mean Bale personally donated $22 million.
Public reporting and project documents show a much broader funding effort.
Bale used his platform to promote the organization and attract support, while Together California pursued a capital campaign and worked with public and private partners.
Government funding played a role as well.
Palmdale provided financial support, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger backed the project. A City of Palmdale economic report described Barger as contributing $500,000 in support of the $22 million development.
The more accurate story is arguably more impressive than the simplified version.
Writing one enormous check would have been fast.
Building an organization capable of surviving years of setbacks, recruiting partners, securing land, raising money and eventually opening its doors required long-term persistence.
Bale stayed involved through years when there was little visible evidence that the project would ever exist.
The Associated Press reported that he attended meetings, visited potential sites and continued pushing the plan through delays and bureaucratic obstacles.
The COVID-19 pandemic added yet another complication.
Still, the project continued.
From Groundbreaking to Opening
Construction officially began in 2024.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Bale described the project as a response to the additional trauma children can experience when they are separated not only from parents but also from siblings.
Together California's own account of the ceremony said more than 100 people, including political leaders, nonprofit partners and community members, gathered to mark the start of construction.
The project took longer than some early schedules anticipated.
That is common with developments of this scale, particularly those involving specialized housing, nonprofit funding and public partnerships.
But in September 2026, the milestone Bale had been working toward since around 2008 finally arrived.
Together California opened in Palmdale.
ABC7 Los Angeles reported from the opening that the village contained 12 furnished homes and was designed specifically to provide nurturing environments while prioritizing sibling unity.
After roughly 18 years, Bale was no longer pointing to architectural drawings.
There were actual doors.
Actual bedrooms.
Actual places where children could eat breakfast with their brothers and sisters.
The Real Meaning of the Project
The most important part of Together California may ultimately have little to do with Christian Bale.
His celebrity made the story visible.
