If a large opening suddenly appears in the fuselage, the difference between the pressure inside and outside becomes an important factor in how the aircraft responds.
At the time of the Flight 159 explosion, the aircraft was still relatively low in its climb.
That does not mean the situation was safe. It was anything but safe.
But the circumstances were more survivable than they might have been later in the flight.
The delay did not "save the aircraft" by itself. It was only one factor in a much larger chain of events.
The aircraft's structural integrity, the location of the blast, the fact that the flight controls remained usable, and the crew's response all played crucial roles.
Still, the timing was extraordinary.
A delay that passengers probably regarded as nothing more than an inconvenience may have helped create the conditions under which the aircraft could survive.
The Pilots Faced an Unthinkable Emergency
The flight crew suddenly had to deal with multiple problems at once.
There had been an explosion.
The aircraft had suffered structural damage.
Cabin pressure had been lost.
Smoke and airflow were present.
And there was a large opening in the fuselage.
Yet the aircraft was still flying.
The official investigation found that the crew responded professionally and followed the appropriate procedures. The captain took control of the aircraft, the crew addressed the depressurization, and the aircraft turned back toward Mogadishu.
This part of the story deserves as much attention as the attack itself.
In dramatic retellings of Flight 159, the bomber and the explosion naturally become the focus.
But the survival of the passengers depended on the people in the cockpit.
The pilots had only moments to understand what had happened and decide what to do next.
They could not simply stop the aircraft.
They could not inspect the damage from outside.
They had to fly a damaged passenger jet back to the airport while dealing with an abnormal pressurization situation and a cabin full of frightened people.
The investigation later concluded that the flight crew's handling of the emergency contributed to the safe outcome.
That is why the survival of Flight 159 should not be described simply as "luck."
Luck played a role.
But training, discipline, aircraft design, teamwork and rapid decision-making played roles too.
The Aircraft Was Damaged but Still Controllable
One of the most important facts about the incident was that the explosion did not destroy the aircraft's critical flight-control systems.
Contemporary reports quoted the pilot as saying that the flight controls were still functioning, allowing him to return to Mogadishu.
That was crucial.
An explosion capable of tearing open the fuselage could easily have produced a much more severe chain of failures.
Instead, the aircraft remained flyable.
The crew therefore had something extremely valuable: control.
They could descend.
They could turn.
They could navigate.
And they could land.
The damaged Airbus A321 eventually returned to Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
The aircraft landed safely.
For the people inside the cabin, the nightmare was finally over.
Eighty People Survived
The numbers tell the story clearly.
There were 81 occupants aboard Flight 159:

The official aviation investigation records one death and minor injuries associated with the incident, while aviation safety summaries record three injured occupants.
