Was Meyer Wounded?
Yes.
The official citation states that Meyer suffered a shrapnel wound to his arm. Despite the injury, he continued into the ambush area.
The viral post’s statement that he “took shrapnel” is therefore supported.
The significance is not merely that Meyer was injured. It is that he continued the rescue attempts after being wounded, while the battle and enemy fire remained active.
Did He Fight Hand to Hand?
This is the least secure part of the viral graphic.
Meyer’s official Medal of Honor citation does not say that he engaged in hand-to-hand combat. President Obama’s remarks at the 2011 ceremony also do not include such an encounter.
Some biographical accounts and later narratives describe Meyer struggling physically with a Taliban fighter while searching for his missing teammates. One version says he fought and killed the man with a rock.
That episode has circulated widely enough to become part of the popular version of Meyer’s story. Nevertheless, it is not included in the primary Medal of Honor citation, which is the strongest official source for assessing the viral post.
There has also been historical debate over some details of the Battle of Ganjgal. Reporting after the award examined differences between the official narrative, witness accounts and operational records.
For that reason, “fought hand to hand” should be identified as a detail from secondary retellings rather than an uncontested element of the official citation.
The verifiable story remains extraordinary without it.

He eventually located the four missing American service members. They had been killed.
Meyer and accompanying Afghan personnel moved their bodies to a safer location so they could be recovered.
The viral post is correct that he helped recover the bodies of four fallen teammates.
This was a central part of the mission for Meyer. Although he had hoped to find them alive, bringing them home ensured that they were not left behind in enemy-controlled territory.
Meyer has repeatedly resisted descriptions of the battle that focus only on his heroism. He has spoken about the loss of his teammates and described September 8, 2009, as the worst day of his life.
That context is essential. The Medal of Honor recognized remarkable courage, but the event itself was a tragedy in which American and Afghan personnel were killed and wounded.
