It has been repeated in interviews, articles and social media posts for years.
It remains funny because the outcome is so perfectly backwards.
The person everyone was trying to imitate was standing among them.
She looked the part.
She knew the character better than anyone.
She had created the original image.
And still, the audience wasn't impressed.
Perhaps that is exactly why Parton enjoyed it so much.
For a moment, she wasn't the superstar.
She wasn't the legendary singer.
She wasn't the celebrity whose name could fill an arena.
She was just another contestant in a ridiculous competition.
And the audience judged her accordingly.
A Lesson in Not Taking Yourself Too Seriously
There is a broader lesson hidden inside the story.
Fame can make people extremely protective of their public image.
When someone spends decades becoming recognizable, there can be enormous pressure to maintain that image.
But Parton's reaction was almost the opposite.
She allowed herself to be ridiculous.

She walked into a room full of people dressed like Dolly Parton.
She dressed herself up like Dolly Parton.
She walked across the stage.
And nobody cared.
In fact, according to Parton's own account, she got less applause than everyone else.
The real Dolly Parton had lost a Dolly Parton look-alike contest.
And rather than being upset, she laughed.
That may be the perfect ending for a story about someone whose career has always combined glamour with humor.
Because sometimes the most memorable thing a superstar can do is remind everyone that even a superstar can become the joke — and enjoy every second of it.
The story also offers a wonderfully simple reminder about celebrity culture: an icon can be imitated, exaggerated and transformed, but the original person doesn't necessarily have to take any of it too seriously.
Dolly Parton certainly didn't.
She walked into that contest hoping to have fun.
She didn't win the trophy.
She didn't receive the loudest applause.
She didn't even get recognized.
But decades later, people are still talking about the night when Dolly Parton tried to look like Dolly Parton — and somehow wasn't Dolly enough.
And perhaps that is the best prize she could have won.
