When “My People” Became More Than a Name
Dolly Parton left East Tennessee decades ago to pursue a career in music.
That career eventually carried her around the world.
She sold millions of records, wrote songs that became cultural landmarks and built a business empire around a public image recognized almost everywhere.
But the mountains of Tennessee remained part of her story.
In November 2016, those mountains were burning.
Hundreds of families in the region where she had grown up watched their homes disappear or become unlivable.
Parton could not rebuild every house.
She could not replace every possession.
She could not undo the disaster.
But she could make sure that people facing the enormous task of starting over had some financial support while they did it.
So the My People Fund began sending $1,000 checks.
Month after month.
Five payments.
Five thousand dollars.
Then came the sixth and final distribution.
Families arrived expecting the familiar $1,000.
They received $5,000 instead.
Ten thousand dollars in total assistance for each qualifying household.
Approximately 900 families helped.
Millions of dollars placed directly into the hands of people recovering from one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives.
Years later, researchers would document the financial benefits of that assistance.
But perhaps the heart of the story can be understood without statistics.
Dolly Parton had grown up in those mountains.
