Fatty Liver: Symptoms, Types, Causes, and Treatment
Today we will talk about fatty liver disease and how to fight it using natural remedies and healthy lifestyle changes.
The liver, as we know, is the organ responsible for eliminating toxins from the body, producing bile, storing energy, and synthesizing proteins, enzymes, and glucose. When excess fat begins to accumulate in liver cells, this is when problems start to appear and liver function becomes affected.
Fatty liver disease is also known as hepatic steatosis. It is a condition that often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. In many cases, the first visible signs may include yellowing of the skin (jaundice) and abdominal discomfort or pain.
When this diagnosis is made, treatment should begin immediately to prevent progressive degeneration of the liver and more serious complications. A healthy liver normally contains between 5% and 10% fat. When fat levels exceed this range, fatty liver disease is present.
Although fatty liver is usually considered a benign condition, if it is not treated in time it can lead to serious illnesses such as liver cancer, cirrhosis, or hepatitis. There are two main types of fatty liver disease:
-
Alcoholic fatty liver, caused by excessive alcohol consumption.
-
Non-alcoholic fatty liver, which is commonly associated with obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and metabolic disorders.
Types and Stages of Fatty Liver Disease
There are two main classifications:
Simple fatty liver:
In this stage, the liver is filled with fat, but liver tissues are not yet damaged.
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH):
In this form, liver cells become inflamed and damaged. Although some damage may heal, the liver may not fully return to its normal condition.
Symptoms of Fatty Liver Disease
Some people may experience the following symptoms:
-
Vomiting
-
Diarrhea
-
Stomach pain
-
Yellowish skin
-
Loss of appetite
-
Feeling of heaviness after eating
-
Excessive sleepiness or fatigue
-
Obesity
When fatty liver is caused by alcohol, additional symptoms may appear, such as red eyes, redness of the facial skin, body odor resembling ethanol, and hand tremors.
Many patients report mild but persistent pain on the right side of the abdomen. While this pain is usually tolerable, it can be uncomfortable and persistent.
Fatty liver disease rarely produces severe symptoms in its early stages and is often silent. For this reason, people who drink alcohol frequently or suffer from diabetes or hypertension should undergo regular medical checkups to detect it early.

If fatty liver disease is caused by excessive alcohol intake, the first and most important step is to stop drinking alcohol completely. If it is caused by other factors, it is essential to adopt a healthy diet and lose weight when necessary.
If the disease is related to medication use, you should consult your doctor so the medication can be replaced or discontinued safely. If fatty liver has already caused cirrhosis or other complications, more intensive treatment will be required, and in some cases surgery may be necessary.
In severe cases, liver transplantation has been required. To prevent disease progression, it is vital to maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, and avoid processed foods and excess sugar. Additionally, good oral hygiene is important, as bacteria from the mouth can reach the liver and contribute to inflammation.
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and natural antioxidants, combined with physical activity, can significantly improve liver health and reduce fat accumulation over time.
