For millions of people, Alana Thompson will probably always be connected to two words:
“Honey Boo Boo.”
She was only five years old when America first encountered the energetic little girl from Georgia on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras.
She was funny.
Loud.
Unfiltered.
And instantly memorable.
A childhood catchphrase became a nickname, the nickname became a television persona, and before Alana was old enough to fully understand what fame meant, millions of strangers already had opinions about who she was.
But more than a decade later, Alana is working toward a future that looks almost nothing like the one viewers first imagined for her.
She is now 21.
She is studying nursing at Regis University in Colorado.
She has said she wants to work as a pediatric intensive care unit nurse.
According to her mother, June Shannon, Alana is also working at a hospital in Denver while continuing her studies and is expected to graduate in 2027.

The transformation is striking.

In a 2025 PEOPLE cover interview, Alana said that when she graduates, she expects to become the first person in her family to earn a college degree.
She summed up her journey with a sentence that may say more about her transformation than anything else:
“I love that I’ve persevered past who people thought I was.”
Before Alana Was a Reality Star, She Was a Five-Year-Old Child
Alana Frances Thompson was born on August 28, 2005, in Georgia.
She entered the public eye through the world of child beauty pageants.
Her appearance on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras made her stand out almost immediately.
She wasn't presented as polished or reserved.
She was spontaneous.
Comedic.
Highly expressive.
And producers quickly recognized that viewers responded to her personality.
A phrase she blurted out during filming helped cement the nickname that would follow her for years: “Honey Boo Boo.”
By 2012, she had become famous enough to receive her own family reality series, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
Alana was six when the show premiered.
The series followed Alana, her mother June Shannon and the rest of their family in rural Georgia.
PEOPLE's retrospective on Alana's 21st birthday confirms that she first became widely known at age five and starred in Here Comes Honey Boo Boo between roughly ages six and eight.
For viewers, the show was entertainment.
For Alana, it was childhood.
That distinction would become much more significant as she got older.

Their relationship had improved, she said, but her perspective had changed.

Then Came a Financial Fight
There was another complicated issue hanging over Alana's childhood fame:
Money.
A child can spend years appearing on television and still have relatively little control over where those earnings go.
For Alana, that became a painful subject.
In 2024 and 2025, her family's reality series publicly explored disputes over money she had earned while working as a minor.
Alana alleged that her mother had taken approximately $35,000 associated with her earnings from Dancing with the Stars: Juniors. PEOPLE later reported that June returned that money.
Alana also said she had never personally seen money she believed she had earned during her years on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
These are Alana's allegations about her own finances rather than an independent accounting of every dollar earned during her childhood career, so they should be described as such.

After graduating from high school in 2023, Alana moved to Colorado and enrolled at Regis University.
Her longtime boyfriend, Dralin Carswell, moved with her.
PEOPLE reported that the couple began living in Denver as Alana pursued her education.
The move was significant for more than geographic reasons.
Georgia was where “Honey Boo Boo” had been created.
Colorado offered Alana a chance to establish a life where she was primarily a student rather than a childhood reality-TV personality.
She could attend class.
Study.
Work.
Build professional skills.
And gradually move toward a career in which television fame wasn't the main qualification.
Nursing Is Not Just Another Storyline
Alana enrolled in nursing at Regis University.
That isn't a symbolic degree choice.
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing requires demanding academic and clinical training.
Regis University's official program information states that its traditional BSN involves 120 credits, including pre-nursing and nursing requirements, as well as weekday clinical rotations.
The university's Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
