For millions of people who watched her grow up on television, Alana Thompson will always be connected to a nickname she never chose for herself.

Honey Boo Boo.

The name became famous when Alana was still a little girl competing in child beauty pageants. At just 5 years old, she appeared on TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras, where her larger-than-life personality quickly caught the attention of viewers. Today, the 21-year-old is a student at Regis University in Denver, Colorado, pursuing nursing and working toward her goal of becoming a pediatric intensive care unit nurse. Her mother, June "Mama June" Shannon, said in April 2026 that Alana was following that dream and working at a Denver hospital while continuing her studies. Shannon also said that Alana was expected to graduate the following year.

That means the girl who once became a reality-TV punchline is now preparing for a profession built around caring for children in some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

It is a striking transformation.

But perhaps the most important part of Alana's story is that she does not appear to view her future as a rejection of her past.

Instead, she is trying to define herself beyond it.

Alana was born on August 28, 2005.

She was only 5 when audiences first encountered her through Toddlers & Tiaras. The show introduced viewers to the world of child beauty pageants, and Alana quickly stood out because of her unmistakable personality and the way she spoke on camera.

Alana graduated from high school in Georgia in May 2023 before moving to Colorado for college.

Recent reporting has identified Regis University as the school she attends in Denver. Forbes reported in 2025 that she was studying nursing there and had previously described her desire to work with babies and children.

Regis University's Loretto Heights School of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program designed to prepare students for professional nursing practice, with graduates eligible to sit for nursing licensure examinations. The university describes its undergraduate nursing education as emphasizing critical thinking, ethical decision-making and a holistic, humanistic approach to patients and communities.

For Alana, college represents something that reality television never could.

It gives her a qualification that belongs entirely to her.

A degree cannot be edited into a funny scene.

A nursing exam cannot be turned into a television catchphrase.

A clinical placement is not about entertainment.

It is about competence.

And that may be one reason her education seems so meaningful to her.

In a 2025 PEOPLE interview, Alana expressed pride in what she had accomplished and said, "When I graduate I'll be the only one in my family with a degree." She also said she loved that she had persevered beyond what people thought she would become.

That statement reveals how deeply the expectations surrounding her childhood still affected her.
