Long before Chris Pratt became Star-Lord, commanded a team of velociraptors on the big screen, or emerged as one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading men, he was a young waiter living an almost completely directionless life on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Christopher Michael Pratt was born on June 21, 1979, in Virginia, Minnesota, and later grew up in Lake Stevens, Washington.
Hollywood was not an obvious destination.
His family did not belong to the entertainment industry, and Pratt did not grow up with the kind of connections that could easily open doors in Los Angeles.
He was, however, comfortable performing.
Years later, Pratt recalled enjoying acting in high-school plays. In a 2018 interview with Ryan Seacrest, he explained that he liked being a performer but never considered becoming a famous actor a realistic possibility.
The idea seemed too remote.
After high school, Pratt briefly attended community college.

Then his best friend, Alex, presented him with an opportunity.
Alex was already living in Hawaii with friends from high school and bought Pratt a one-way ticket to Maui.
Pratt accepted.

Maui offered exactly the kind of freedom Pratt wanted.
He spent roughly a year there, living an unconventional lifestyle with friends.

He and his friends worked minimal hours and spent their free time surfing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling and enjoying the island.

Men's Health later described the same period, noting that Pratt had moved to Maui after a friend sent him a plane ticket and that he lived in a van on the beach while waiting tables.
At some point, Pratt needed a reliable way to earn enough money for daily life.

That environment suited Pratt.
Years later, while recalling the experience, he joked about the restaurant appreciating a gregarious waiter willing to get in customers' faces, sing birthday songs and play trivia.
Pratt had the right personality for it.
He was energetic.
Outgoing.
Comfortable approaching strangers.
And that combination of confidence and enthusiasm would matter enormously when a particular customer walked through the door.

One day, actress Rae Dawn Chong entered the restaurant.
