Giving Back: 6-Year-Old Feeds Homeless For Her Birthday
How did you celebrate your birthday as a child? For newly-turned 6-year-old Armani Crews, her birthday wish wasn’t cake or toys — she wanted to feed the homeless in her community. (source: ABC News)
Every year she normally has a birthday party, but this time, her mother says, “she wanted to feed those who she felt were less fortunate.” (source: CBS News) After asking family and friends to contribute food and care packages, Armani’s dream came alive. On Sunday, her loved ones joined her in Chicago’s East Garfield Park to serve those in need. (source: CBS News)
A Birthday of Service & Compassion
Armani persisted with her plan even when her parents first thought she was joking. Her mother, Artesha Crew, recalled that when asked what she wanted for her birthday, Armani insisted: “I want to make sure they eat.” (source: CBS News) Her father cautioned her she might not get birthday gifts if they did this, and she replied, “That’s okay.” (source: Inside Edition)
On her big day, the family purchased and served a full holiday-style spread: chicken, fish, spaghetti, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls, cake, and more. (source: ABC News) They handed out care packages as well, containing essentials like toothbrushes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, snacks, and personal hygiene items. (source: Inside Edition) They estimate they fed over 125 people during the event. (source: Inside Edition)
During the event, many passersby and homeless community members thanked Armani. Some even wished her a Happy Birthday or gave cash, which her family pledged to donate to charity. (source: CBS News) Armani enjoyed interacting, handing out water, and making sure everyone felt seen. As she told ABC News, “It was nice to be nice.” (source: ABC News)
Why This Moment Resonates
Armani’s birthday act is far more than a feel-good story. It shows how empathy, agency, and community can bloom even in early childhood. Many stories of children giving back (e.g. in Because of Them We Can) celebrate similar gestures of generosity, and Armani’s stands out for its scale and sincerity. (source: Because of Them We Can)
Her initiative also underlines the power of intentional parenting and modeling service. From a young age, she was encouraged to think about others — and when she had the space and support, she acted on it.
In a world where children are often seen as passive or recipients, Armani turned her birthday into a day of giving — reminding adults and peers alike that kindness is not bound by age.
