New formats and AI-powered document workflows may become part of the product.
But the underlying philosophy remains remarkably simple.
Identify something people struggle with.
Make it easier.
Make the experience accessible.
Keep improving it.
And do not necessarily assume that building a successful company requires following the conventional startup playbook.
From One Person's Frustration to a Global Utility
In 2010, Marco Grossi did not appear to be setting out to build one of the internet's best-known PDF utilities.
He had a problem.
He had the skills to solve it.
So he built a tool.
That tool became a website.
The website attracted users.
The users created demand.
The demand eventually became a company.
And the company grew into a global document-processing platform.
According to iLovePDF's own account, the project remains rooted in its original purpose: helping people work with documents more easily.
That is perhaps what makes the story so compelling.
The success did not come from making a simple problem look complicated.
It came from doing the opposite.
Grossi saw a frustrating task and tried to remove the frustration.
The lesson is not necessarily that every small side project will become a global business.
Most will not.
The more useful lesson is that valuable ideas do not always announce themselves as billion-dollar opportunities.
Sometimes they appear as tiny annoyances.
A file that will not merge.
A document that is too large to send.
A PDF that needs to be converted.
A task that takes twenty minutes when it should take two.
And somewhere in that frustration is a question that entrepreneurs have been asking since the earliest days of computing:
Why is this so difficult?
Then comes the more important question:
Can I make it easier?
For Marco Grossi, that question led to iLovePDF.
What began as a personal solution in Barcelona in 2010 eventually became a service used by people around the world. The company's own history, along with reporting from El País and infrastructure documentation from OVHcloud, shows how a highly focused utility can grow to remarkable scale without beginning as a conventional venture-backed startup.
And perhaps that is the most enduring part of the story.
The internet is full of complicated products competing for attention.
But sometimes the products people remember are the ones that quietly remove an annoyance from their lives.
No hype is required.
No grand promise is necessary.
Just a problem, a solution, and millions of people discovering that something which used to be frustrating can finally be simple.
