Henry Cavill’s Nephew Said His Uncle Was Superman — And Nobody Believed Him

Imagine being a child and discovering that one of the most famous superheroes in the world is actually your uncle.

You would probably want to tell everyone.

That is exactly what happened to Henry Cavill’s young nephew, Thomas, according to a story Cavill himself has shared in interviews. When Thomas proudly told people at school that his uncle was Superman, however, his classmates and teacher did not react with excitement.

They thought he was making it up.

To them, “My uncle is Superman” sounded like the kind of thing an imaginative child might say while pretending to live in a superhero movie. The problem was that Thomas was not simply talking about a fictional character.

His uncle really was the actor who had been cast to play Superman.

Cavill later recalled the amusing situation in interviews, explaining how excited his nephew had been about his casting as the Man of Steel. The story became popular online because it captures one of those wonderfully strange moments when a child tells the truth and adults have difficulty believing it.

There is, however, an important detail that often gets lost when the story is reposted on social media: some later versions dramatically embellished what happened. Viral posts have claimed that Cavill physically walked Thomas into school to prove to the teacher that the boy was telling the truth. Fact-checking of the story found that the famous photograph frequently used with those posts was taken in a different context, and Cavill's own retellings do not establish all of those additional details.

The real story is already entertaining enough.

A Child With an Almost Impossible Story

For most children, saying “my uncle is Superman” would sound like fantasy.

Superman is one of the most recognizable fictional characters in popular culture. He is not simply a famous movie character; he is a superhero who has existed in comics, television, movies, animation and merchandise for generations.

So when a child tells a teacher that Superman is his uncle, skepticism would be understandable.

Thomas, however, had a very unusual technicality on his side.

He was not claiming that Clark Kent had somehow become a member of his family.

He was talking about Henry Cavill.

Cavill had been selected to portray Superman in Man of Steel, the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures production directed by Zack Snyder. DC's official information for the movie identifies Cavill as the actor playing Clark Kent/Superman.

For a young relative, though, the distinction between “my uncle is Superman” and “my uncle plays Superman” probably did not feel particularly important.

To Thomas, his uncle was the person who was going to be Superman on screen.

And that was an extraordinary thing to have in his family.

Henry Cavill Becomes Superman

The timing of the story is important.

Cavill's casting as Superman represented a major moment in his acting career. Man of Steel eventually reached theaters in 2013, introducing his version of Clark Kent to a worldwide audience.

According to DC's official movie information, the film followed Clark Kent as he discovered his origins and ultimately embraced his identity as Superman. The cast also included Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Jonathan and Martha Kent, and Russell Crowe as Jor-El.

For Cavill's family, however, the significance of the casting was much more personal.

They did not have to wait for the movie's premiere to see him become famous as Superman.

They already knew him as Henry.

That made the situation particularly funny.

Adults outside the family might see a major Hollywood actor being announced as Superman. A young nephew could simply see his uncle getting a very exciting new job.

And Thomas apparently wanted everyone at school to know about it.

Cavill has described his nephew as being extremely excited about his casting.

In an appearance on LIVE with Kelly and Ryan, Cavill discussed the story of Thomas and how his nephew had gone to school and talked about his uncle playing Superman. The interview itself is an important source because the story did not originate solely from an anonymous social-media account; Cavill personally recounted the anecdote.

The basic situation was simple.
