A Broken Razor, a Kind Police Officer, and a Second Chance

Sometimes, a fresh start does not begin with a major opportunity or a life-changing announcement.

Sometimes, it begins with something much smaller — a broken electric razor, a stranger willing to stop, and a few minutes of kindness.

That is what happened to a homeless man named Phil in Tallahassee, Florida, in July 2018.

Phil was trying to prepare himself for an opportunity that could potentially change his circumstances. He had been given a chance to pursue a job at a nearby McDonald’s, but there was a simple requirement: he needed to appear clean-shaven.

For someone preparing for a job interview, shaving might seem like one of the easiest things to take care of.

For Phil, however, it became an unexpected obstacle.

His electric razor was not working properly. He also did not have a mirror, making it extremely difficult to shave himself accurately.

Then he encountered Tallahassee Police Officer Tony Carlson.

What happened next was captured on video by a passerby, eventually spreading far beyond the gas station where the encounter took place.

But the viral video was only the beginning.

The more meaningful part of the story came afterward, when a community helped Phil overcome several additional obstacles and ultimately reach the goal he had been working toward: getting a job.

An Unexpected Problem Before an Important Opportunity

The story unfolded in Tallahassee in July 2018.

According to CBS News, Officer Tony Carlson had just finished responding to a call when he encountered Phil outside a Circle K gas station on Thomasville Road. Phil was trying to use an electric razor, but the device was not functioning properly.

Phil approached Carlson and asked whether he knew anything about fixing electric razors.

Carlson took a look.

The problem was relatively simple: the razor was missing a screw. Carlson did not have a replacement screw, but he was able to tighten the remaining screw enough to get the razor functioning again.

At that point, the immediate problem appeared to be solved.

Phil could shave.

Except there was another problem.

He did not have a mirror.

Trying to shave without being able to see his own face was difficult, particularly when he was trying to make himself presentable for an important job opportunity.

Carlson could have simply walked away after repairing the razor.

Instead, he decided to help Phil finish the job.

The officer took the electric razor and shaved Phil's beard for him right there outside the gas station.

The entire interaction was remarkably ordinary.

There was no elaborate rescue operation. No dramatic intervention. No major financial gift.

It was simply one person noticing that another person was struggling and deciding to help.

Phil Was Trying to Get Back to Work

The significance of the moment becomes clearer when considering why Phil was shaving in the first place.

Phil told Carlson that he was trying to get a job at a nearby McDonald's. He had apparently been told that he needed to be clean-shaven for the opportunity.

According to CBS News, McDonald's recruiter Judy McClellan had spoken with Phil about applying. Restaurant owner Raphael Vazquez later said that Phil had demonstrated that he was serious about wanting to work.

For Phil, therefore, the razor was not simply a grooming tool.

It represented something larger.

It was connected to the possibility of employment, income and a path toward changing his circumstances.

That context helps explain why Carlson chose to intervene.

In an interview reported by WCTV, Carlson said Phil seemed excited about the opportunity. The officer explained that if Phil was willing to help himself, he felt he should do what he could to help Phil as well.

It was a small decision in the moment.

But for Phil, it could make a significant difference.

Someone Captured the Moment

Carlson did not know that the interaction was being recorded.

A passerby saw what was happening and filmed the officer shaving Phil outside the gas station. The footage was subsequently shared on social media and quickly attracted widespread attention.

The video resonated with people because the situation was so simple.

A police officer was not responding to a crime.

He was not making an arrest.
