Hugh Jackman was ‘warned’ about ex Deborra-Lee Furness’ major decision post-divorce: report

Australian actress and producer Deborra‑Lee Furness (69) is reportedly preparing to tell her side of her long-marriage and divorce from Hugh Jackman (57) via a forthcoming memoir. The book deal comes after their highly-publicised split and promises to cover their 27-year marriage, the adoption and raising of their children, and her life now post-divorce.

According to insider commentary relayed via the Daily Mail, Jackman “had heard about Deb’s plans but he didn’t really know until she told him herself during their secret meet-up.” The source added that “he’d been warned early on that almost every A-list divorcee is approached to write a book, but part of him hoped Deb wouldn’t take that fat publisher’s cheque.”

Furness, the source says, will reflect on her near-three-decade union with Jackman—including its highs and lows, their joint adoption of children Ava and Oscar, and her own evolution following their separation.

A key associate cited in the original report characterised the move not as “revenge,” but as Furness’s desire “to find her voice, put herself first and reignite her career.” The same person described the project as a “bold, emotional memoir about love, identity, and starting over.”

Jackman and Furness announced their separation in September 2023 after almost 30 years together. Furness officially filed for divorce in May 2025.  According to legal filings, the divorce was uncontested and simply awaited a judge’s sign-off.

In her first public statement since the split, Furness described the end of the marriage as “a profound wound that cuts deep,” offering compassion to “everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal.”

During this time, Jackman moved on to a relationship with his former Broadway co-star Sutton Foster, a development that some outlets tie into the breakdown of Jackman and Furness’s marriage.

Media sources also note that publishers are keenly interested in securing Furness’s book. She has reportedly been inundated with offers to pen a tell-all about her marriage and divorce.

Additional Context and Insights

  • The marriage between Furness and Jackman began in 1996 after meeting on the set of the TV series Correlli in 1995.  Over the years, they adopted two children and frequently appeared as a strong Hollywood couple.

  • While the separation was announced in 2023, formal divorce paperwork was only filed in May 2025. The nearly two-year delay reflects the complexity of long-term celebrity relationships and shared assets.

  • Sources emphasised that the split was handled quietly in many respects: the divorce is described as “uncontested,” meaning both parties reportedly agreed on terms ahead of time. Furness’s remark about “betrayal” has led to speculation in the press about the reasons behind the split, including Jackman’s new relationship. While Furness did not name individuals, the timing and surrounding reporting suggest deeper emotional undercurrents.

  • The memoir reportedly will give Furness a chance to re-frame her own identity beyond “Hugh Jackman’s wife,” focusing on her own voice, values, and journey post-marriage.

Why This Story Resonates

This development taps into several broader themes: the narrative of long-term marriages and their endings, the celebrity memoir trend (especially among high-profile divorces), issues of identity and self-redefinition after partnership, and the interplay between public image and private life. Additionally, it underscores how even amicable or professionally-handled separations can carry deep emotional weight and public interest.
