Kate Middleton’s Simple “Me Too” About Prince William Reveals a Love Strengthened by Their Most Difficult Years
Sometimes, the most meaningful declarations of love are not carefully prepared speeches or dramatic public gestures.
Sometimes, they are only two words.
For Catherine, Princess of Wales, one such moment came during a special reception marking the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research UK at St James’s Palace on June 2, 2026.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted the reception, bringing together researchers, clinicians, volunteers, supporters and others whose work has contributed to the fight against cancer.
The Princess of Wales was also present, making the occasion particularly poignant after her own experience with cancer and treatment.
But amid the significance of the evening, it was a brief and personal exchange that attracted attention.
During a conversation with Irish singer Ronan Keating and his wife, Storm, the subject turned to Prince William.
When Keating reportedly expressed that he wished William could have been there, Catherine offered a simple response:
“Me too.”
Two ordinary words.
Yet coming from a woman who had endured an extraordinarily difficult period alongside her husband, they carried considerably more emotional weight.
For a royal couple traditionally careful about public displays of affection, the remark provided a small glimpse into a marriage that has survived intense public scrutiny, family responsibilities, royal obligations and, most recently, a frightening health crisis.
After 15 years of marriage, William and Catherine appear to have reached a stage in their relationship where affection does not necessarily need to be announced loudly.
Sometimes, it can be found in the smallest moments.

A Significant Evening for the Princess of Wales
The Cancer Research UK anniversary reception was more than another entry in the royal calendar.
Cancer Research UK has played a major role in British cancer research for generations, supporting work involving prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Its 125th anniversary therefore represented an important milestone for the organization and the countless families affected by cancer.
For Catherine, however, the subject inevitably carried an additional personal significance.
In March 2024, after weeks of speculation surrounding her absence from public duties, the Princess revealed in a video message that cancer had been discovered following major abdominal surgery.
She explained that the news had come as a “huge shock” and that she and William had needed time to process what was happening privately, particularly for the sake of their three children.
What followed was one of the most difficult periods of their married life.
Catherine stepped away from most public duties while undergoing preventative chemotherapy. William continued carrying out selected engagements while simultaneously supporting his wife and protecting as much of their family routine as possible.
By September 2024, Catherine announced that she had completed chemotherapy.
Then, in January 2025, she shared another major update: she was in remission.
Her return to public life has been gradual rather than immediate, reflecting what she herself has described as the long process of recovery and adjustment following cancer treatment.
That history gave her presence at a Cancer Research UK reception a resonance that would have been impossible only a few years earlier.
She was not simply attending as a senior member of the Royal Family.
She was also someone who understood, on a personal level, how dramatically a cancer diagnosis can change the emotional landscape of a family.
A Brief Exchange With Ronan Keating
Ronan Keating also has a deeply personal connection to cancer awareness.
His mother, Marie Keating, died from breast cancer in 1998 at the age of 51. In the years that followed, Keating and his family established the Marie Keating Foundation, which works to promote cancer awareness and prevention.
Cancer Research UK has also worked with Keating and the foundation for many years. The charity says its Cancer Awareness Roadshow partnership with the Keating family began in 2006 and has since helped provide cancer-awareness information to hundreds of thousands of people.
So when Catherine spoke with Ronan and Storm Keating at the anniversary reception, the conversation brought together people for whom cancer was far more than an abstract cause.
During their exchange, William’s absence came up.
He was carrying out other royal duties that day, including a visit connected with the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service in Scotland.
According to reports of the conversation, when Ronan indicated that it would have been nice to see William, Catherine smiled and replied:
“Me too.”
There was nothing theatrical about it.
That was precisely why the remark attracted attention.
Royal life is built around carefully organized engagements, formal language and public responsibilities. William and Catherine have traditionally kept the most intimate parts of their relationship away from cameras.
A spontaneous “Me too” therefore felt different.
It was not an official statement about their marriage.
It sounded simply like a wife saying that she missed her husband.

Another Conversation Revealed William’s Compassion
The evening produced another personal moment when Catherine spoke with Sebastien Bowen, the husband of the late Dame Deborah James.
Deborah became one of Britain’s best-known cancer campaigners after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Through her writing, broadcasting and advocacy, she encouraged people to pay attention to symptoms and speak more openly about bowel cancer. She became widely known as “Bowelbabe” and helped establish the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK.
Prince William developed a connection with Deborah and her family during the final period of her life.
In May 2022, he personally visited the family home to present her with her Damehood.
Deborah died the following month at the age of 40.
At the 2026 Cancer Research UK reception, Catherine spoke with Sebastien Bowen, giving the conversation an emotional connection to William even though he was not physically present.
Reports of the exchange said Bowen spoke appreciatively about William’s kindness toward his family.
Catherine’s response was affectionate and revealing:
