What Gypsy Rose Blanchard Said About a Possible Overdose

After news of the death became public, Gypsy Rose Blanchard spoke to PEOPLE about her loss.

She said that she believed Urker had overdosed, although she did not know whether it had been intentional. She also said that he had recently been in a poor emotional state.

This is significant information, but it requires careful attribution.

The responsible wording is:

Blanchard believes Urker may have died from an overdose.

It would be premature to write:

Urker’s official cause of death was an overdose.

Only the investigating authorities, coroner or medical examiner can establish the official cause and manner of death. A family member or partner may possess important knowledge, but even someone close to the deceased may not know exactly what happened without medical testing.

The difference matters especially when there is uncertainty about intent.

An accidental overdose, intentional self-harm, an unexpected drug interaction and a medical event involving prescribed medication can all produce superficially similar circumstances. They carry different factual, legal and emotional meanings.

At this stage, there is no responsible basis for confidently assigning one of those explanations to Urker’s death.

Blanchard’s remarks should be reported compassionately, but not converted into a final toxicology conclusion.

Who Was Ken Urker?

Ken Urker became publicly known primarily because of his long and complicated relationship with Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

Their connection began while Blanchard was incarcerated for her role in the killing of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard.

The Blanchard case had already attracted widespread attention because of the severe abuse Gypsy said she endured throughout childhood. Dee Dee had repeatedly represented her daughter as seriously ill, subjected her to unnecessary medical treatments and controlled much of her life.

Urker learned about the case and began communicating with Gypsy while she was in prison. Their correspondence developed into a romantic relationship.

He proposed to her in October 2018.

The engagement did not lead directly to marriage. Their relationship became intermittent, with periods of reconciliation and separation. They briefly called off the engagement and reunited in 2019 before eventually separating again for several years.

During that time, Blanchard formed a relationship with Ryan Anderson. She and Anderson married while she was still incarcerated.

Blanchard was released from prison in December 2023 after serving approximately eight years of her sentence. Her relationship with Anderson soon deteriorated, and she announced their separation in March 2024 before filing for divorce the following month.

Her divorce was finalized later in 2024.

How Ken and Gypsy Reconnected

Urker and Blanchard romantically reconnected in April 2024.

Urker later recalled visiting her during the first weekend of that month, after her release from prison. They spent time together again and attended a jazz festival soon afterward.

Their reconciliation drew intense public interest because it occurred so quickly after Blanchard’s separation from Anderson.
