A Lion in Kenya Walked Away With a Photographer’s Giant Camera Lens — And the Bizarre Moment Was Caught on Video
Wildlife photographers travel thousands of miles hoping to capture an unforgettable encounter with a lion.
Sometimes, however, the lion decides to become part of the photography process in a completely unexpected way.
That is essentially what happened during a safari in Kenya's Maasai Mara, when a lion discovered a professional photographer's enormous telephoto lens lying on the ground, picked it up in its mouth and casually walked away with it.
The extraordinary scene looked almost too perfectly absurd to be real.
A powerful African lion moved through the grass carrying a large professional camera lens between its jaws. The camouflage-covered piece of equipment looked tiny compared with the animal, even though lenses of this type are among the biggest pieces of equipment wildlife photographers regularly carry.
Fortunately, another photographer was nearby.
His name was Dansen Raddy Raddy, and he managed to capture the encounter on video.
According to Raddy's account to photography publication PetaPixel, the lens belonged to another photographer who had accidentally dropped it. The lion apparently discovered the equipment before its owner could safely recover it.
Instead of walking past the strange object, the curious animal investigated.
Then it picked it up.
And walked away.
For anyone familiar with the price of professional wildlife photography equipment, the footage was simultaneously hilarious and painful to watch.
An Unexpected Discovery in the Maasai Mara
The Maasai Mara is one of the world's most famous destinations for wildlife photography.
Its open grasslands provide opportunities to photograph lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hyenas and countless other animals.
Photographers frequently spend hours waiting for a few seconds of action.
A lion may sleep for most of the morning before suddenly standing, interacting with another member of its pride or beginning to hunt.
Being prepared for those brief moments is part of the challenge.
That is why wildlife photographers often keep their cameras and long lenses ready.
But on this occasion, one piece of equipment ended up somewhere it was definitely not supposed to be.
On the ground.
According to PetaPixel's June 2025 report, a photographer accidentally dropped the large telephoto lens.
Exactly how it was dropped was not detailed in the report, and the photographer who owned the lens was not publicly identified.
What happened next, however, was documented.
A lion found it.
The animal approached the strange object and eventually lifted it in its mouth.
Nearby, Raddy was positioned to photograph the lion.
At first, he did not realize what the animal was carrying.
Then he looked more carefully.
It was a camera lens.
Raddy told PetaPixel that he had been waiting for the lion to approach and was surprised when he realized it had picked up the equipment.
He quickly began recording.
The result was the kind of wildlife footage nobody could realistically plan.
When the Subject Takes the Equipment
Normally, the relationship between a wildlife photographer and a lion is very straightforward.
The human holds the camera.
The lion is the subject.
This time, those roles became slightly confused.
Video and images from the encounter showed the lion carrying the bulky lens in its mouth while moving across the landscape.
The lens was protected by a camouflage cover, the kind often used by wildlife photographers to protect expensive equipment and make it less visually conspicuous.
To the lion, however, the object apparently remained interesting enough to pick up.
Of course, nobody can know exactly what the lion thought the object was.
