The verified version is already entertaining enough without embellishment.

A photographer accidentally dropped a large telephoto lens during a safari in Kenya's Maasai Mara.

A lion found it.

The animal picked up the lens in its mouth and walked away.

Photographer Dansen Raddy Raddy witnessed the extraordinary sight and recorded it.

The equipment was later recovered with damage.

Those facts alone created one of the more unusual wildlife photography stories of 2025.

When the Perfect Wildlife Story Finds You

Most photographers arrive in the Maasai Mara hoping to return with photographs that are difficult to reproduce.

A lion hunting.

A mother interacting with cubs.

A dramatic portrait in golden light.

A powerful animal crossing the savanna beneath a huge African sky.

Those photographs may require patience, skill, expensive equipment and a great deal of luck.

But occasionally, the unforgettable moment is not the one anybody planned.

Sometimes the lion does not stand perfectly in front of the camera.

Sometimes it picks up the camera equipment instead.

And perhaps that is why this particular encounter resonated with so many people.

It captured something genuinely unpredictable about photographing wild animals.

No matter how sophisticated the camera, how expensive the lens or how carefully the photographer prepares, nature remains outside human control.

The photographers could choose where to position themselves.

They could choose their cameras.

They could choose their lenses.

They could wait for the right light.

But nobody could have written a shooting plan that said:

"Next, the lion will arrive carrying someone's telephoto lens."

That part was entirely up to the lion.

For most visitors to the Maasai Mara, the dream is to come home with an unforgettable photograph of a lion.

For one unfortunate photographer, the memorable story was slightly different.

The lion nearly came home with the photography equipment.

Sources and Fact-Checking Notes

PetaPixel — “Lion Steals Photographer’s Camera Lens,” June 5, 2025.

This is the principal source for the incident and includes comments from photographer Dansen Raddy Raddy, who recorded the encounter. It reports that another photographer accidentally dropped the lens, the lion picked it up, and the equipment was later recovered with damage. PetaPixel also notes that the camouflage covering prevents a definitive identification of the lens model.

Canon U.S.A. — RF600mm F4 L IS USM official product specifications.

Canon lists this professional 600mm f/4 super-telephoto lens at $14,499 and specifies a weight of approximately 6.8 pounds/3,090 grams. This is included as a verified example demonstrating that professional wildlife lenses in the apparent class of the lens seen in the video can indeed cost around $15,000. It does not establish that the lion was carrying this exact model.

Nikon — NIKKOR Z 600mm f/4 TC VR S official product information.

Nikon describes its 600mm f/4 as a professional super-telephoto lens designed for sports and wildlife photography, further illustrating the specialized class of equipment commonly used for distant wildlife subjects.

Fstoppers — “Lions Eat Photographer’s Camera in Kenyan National Park,” July 22, 2016.

Documents an earlier, separate Maasai Mara encounter in which lions investigated and damaged remotely positioned photography equipment.

Khaleej Times — Lioness and GoPro encounter in the Maasai Mara, September 2023.

Reports a separate incident involving photographer Ahmed Galal and a GoPro picked up by a lioness. Unlike the 2025 dropped-lens incident, the camera in this earlier encounter had intentionally been positioned to capture the animal's reaction.
