Before a cosmetic procedure changed the course of her life, Lyn May was already one of the most recognizable women in Mexican entertainment. With her dramatic stage presence, distinctive beauty and fearless performances, she became a major figure in the country's cabaret culture and the popular film movement commonly known as cine de ficheras.

But behind the glamorous photographs and dazzling performances is a much darker story—one that May has spent years discussing publicly.

According to her own account, what she believed would be a relatively simple cosmetic treatment turned into a decades-long struggle after a substance she says was represented to her as collagen was injected into her face. May later said that what entered her body was not the cosmetic product she expected, but cooking oil. Other retellings of her story have also mentioned baby oil.

The consequences did not necessarily reveal themselves immediately. Over time, May said she began developing itching and hard lumps beneath her skin. Attempts to remove the foreign material brought their own complications, and the emotional consequences became so severe that she has spoken openly about experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Mexico's Secretaría de Cultura describes May as an actress, exotic dancer and acrobat of Chinese ancestry who became particularly well known during the 1970s as one of the important personalities associated with cine de ficheras, a commercially successful genre combining comedy, nightlife and adult-oriented themes. The government cultural database also credits filmmaker Alberto Isaac with casting her in Tívoli, an important early step in her film career.

Her road to celebrity was far removed from the privileged upbringing that people sometimes associate with glamorous entertainers.

Accounts of her early years describe financial hardship and a childhood spent in Guerrero. As her career developed, however, her combination of dancing ability, confidence and distinctive appearance helped her stand out in Mexico's highly competitive entertainment world.

By the 1970s and 1980s, the name Lyn May had become familiar to audiences.

She performed in cabarets, appeared on television and became a recognizable presence on the big screen. Among the productions associated with her career are Tívoli, Noches de Cabaret and Las Braceras. She would eventually become one of the performers most strongly identified with the era of Mexican vedettes.

Her public persona was deliberately glamorous.

The elaborate costumes, choreography and sensual stage performances were part of a tradition in which a successful vedette needed to be much more than simply attractive. She had to command a room.

May could do exactly that.

The nickname attached to her public image said everything: “La Diosa del Amor”—“The Goddess of Love.” Entertainment biographies continue to associate that title with her career and her status as one of the best-known figures of cine de ficheras.
