Three nights later, according to People's account of their relationship, they had their first official date.
And the relationship continued.
For McConaughey, who had spent years navigating fame and highly publicized romances, something apparently felt different.
Years later, reflecting on their time together, he wrote that Camila remained the person he wanted to date, sleep beside and wake up next to.
It was a striking statement not because celebrity declarations of love are rare, but because theirs was backed by almost twenty years of shared history.
Camila Alves Had Already Built Her Own Life
It would be easy to tell this story simply as "Matthew McConaughey found the woman of his dreams."
But that would leave out half of the relationship.
Camila Alves had already undertaken an extraordinary journey of her own.
Brazilian-born Alves moved to the United States when she was young and worked a series of jobs while learning English and building an independent life.
In a 2014 interview with London's Evening Standard, she recalled working cleaning and restaurant jobs before eventually being discovered by a modeling agency and moving to New York. She went on to establish herself professionally in fashion and later expanded into entrepreneurship and other ventures.
That background matters.
When McConaughey met her, he wasn't meeting someone whose identity began with him.
She had already experienced immigration, work, uncertainty and professional ambition on her own terms.
Over time, their relationship would become a partnership in which both pursued careers while also building a family.

From Couple to Parents
In January 2008, McConaughey announced that he and Camila were expecting their first child.

Their son Levi was born later that year.
Their daughter Vida followed in January 2010.

Why They Didn't Rush Into Marriage
Interestingly, children came before marriage for Matthew and Camila.
They were together for years and had already welcomed Levi and Vida before becoming engaged.
McConaughey proposed on Christmas Day in 2011.
The following June, they married.
The ceremony took place at their home in Texas on June 9, 2012, surrounded by family and friends.
ABC News reported at the time that the couple held a small Texas ceremony after approximately six years together. CBS News similarly confirmed that McConaughey's representative had announced the marriage and that the couple's children were present.
It wasn't a Hollywood ballroom wedding designed primarily for photographers.
Instead, the celebration reflected the life they were creating.
