Meet The Owner Of The First Beauty Supply In New Paltz, New York

After 40 Years, Her Dream Finally Came True — New Paltz Native Opens First Black-Owned Beauty Supply Store

It took four decades, but Janice Butcher never stopped believing in her dream. Today, that long-held vision has blossomed into JBee Beauty Supply, New Paltz’s very first Black-owned beauty supply store — a business built on persistence, community pride, and faith in herself (The New Paltz Oracle).

From a College Dream to a Community Milestone

A familiar face in New Paltz, New York, and a proud SUNY New Paltz alumna, Butcher first dreamed of opening a beauty supply store back in 1984 while studying on campus. As she told The New Paltz Oracle, maintaining her hair during those years was a constant struggle. “There was no place to get your hair braided, no place to purchase the hair, no place to purchase the products,” she recalled. “I would have to go back to 125th Street in Harlem every time I needed something.”

That challenge planted the seed for an idea that would stay with her for decades — a vision of creating a space where Black women, students, and families could find the products and care they needed without traveling miles away.

Butcher never let go of that dream, even as life led her down other paths. “Sometimes the dream has to wait for the right season,” she said in an interview with Hudson Valley One.

Building Step by Step

It wasn’t until 2015 that Butcher began to put her long-term vision into motion. She attended a workshop hosted by the New York Department of Labor called “Dreams, Goals, and Actions,” which encouraged participants to reconnect with their passions and map out achievable steps toward success (The Daily Freeman). Inspired, she launched her first small business later that year — Brains & Beauty, a home-based venture that helped her learn the basics of entrepreneurship.

Eight years later, in 2023, her dream finally came full circle with the grand opening of JBee Beauty Supply, located in the heart of downtown New Paltz. The name “JBee” pays tribute to her college nickname, “J.B.,” a symbol of how her roots at SUNY New Paltz helped shape the woman and business owner she is today.

More Than a Store — A Space for Empowerment

JBee Beauty Supply offers a wide selection of haircare products, wigs, extensions, and beauty accessories, catering to the diverse needs of Black and multicultural customers in the Hudson Valley. The shop even includes an on-site licensed cosmetologist, providing convenience for college students and locals who often struggled to find nearby services.

Butcher says her mission goes far beyond beauty. “The presence of this store is for people to be empowered,” she explained. “It’s about walking into a space where you feel seen, represented, and celebrated.”

Students at SUNY New Paltz have embraced the new business wholeheartedly. Fourth-year theater arts major Angelina Bell told The New Paltz Oracle, “We’ve needed a store like this for such a long time in New Paltz. People don’t realize there’s a thriving Black community here — on campus, off campus, and throughout the town. Seeing a business like this that represents marginalized communities is inspiring.”

Representation and Resilience

The beauty supply industry in the United States generates over $2.5 billion annually, yet fewer than 10% of beauty supply stores are Black-owned, despite the fact that Black consumers drive more than 80% of sales in the ethnic beauty market (Black Enterprise). Butcher’s accomplishment, therefore, is not only personal — it’s deeply significant. She’s breaking barriers while creating a space that celebrates identity, culture, and entrepreneurship in a small town where diversity often goes unnoticed.

“Through life’s challenges, just continue to keep the faith,” she advised others chasing their own dreams. “Do not give up on your dream. If you were given a dream, it was meant to happen.”

Butcher hopes her journey inspires the next generation of entrepreneurs to take that first step — no matter how long it takes. “It took me forty years,” she said, “but every obstacle prepared me for this moment.”

A Dream Rooted in Community

For the residents of New Paltz — especially students and families of color — JBee Beauty Supply isn’t just a store; it’s a celebration of belonging. “It’s wonderful to see a business like this open here,” one local customer told Hudson Valley One. “It’s more than convenience — it’s representation.”

From her humble beginnings as a college student struggling to find hair products to owning her own storefront in the same town decades later, Janice Butcher has proven that patience and perseverance can indeed make dreams come true.

Congratulations, Ms. Butcher — your success is 40 years in the making, and it’s just the beginning.
