“Why did you exclude Emma?”
Rachel wiped her eyes.
“Because Mark told me that if Helena stayed close to Emma, you would eventually discover everything.”
“Everything?”
Rachel nodded.
“He said you couldn’t know about the legal work. He said it would create problems.”
Laura stared at her.
“What did he have to hide?”
“I don’t know.”
Rachel looked genuinely frightened.
“He never explained.”
Then she said something that changed everything.
“But Helena found something.”
“What?”
“A file.”
The File
Rachel went upstairs.
She returned carrying a thin folder.
“I didn’t open it.”
Laura took it.
Inside were copies of emails.
Letters.
Bank statements.
Meeting notes.
Names.
Dates.
Laura read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
Her hands began to shake.
Mark had not simply been helping Rachel.
He had been managing money connected to Rachel’s business dispute.
And some of that money had passed through an account connected to a company Mark controlled.
Laura looked up.
“Why didn’t you report this?”
Rachel shook her head.
“I didn’t understand it.”
“Did Mark tell you it was legal?”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I trusted him.”
Laura closed the folder.
“Where did this come from?”
“Helena found it.”
“Where?”
“In Mark’s car.”
Laura’s heart stopped.
“Helena?”
Rachel nodded.
“She saw him put it there.”
Laura sat down.
“Does Mark know she found it?”
“I don’t think so.”
That explained the party.
That explained the pressure.
That explained the secrecy.
Mark wasn’t trying to protect Emma.
He was trying to control who knew what.
And Helena had become dangerous because she had discovered something she wasn’t supposed to see.
The Real Reason Emma Was Excluded
Laura returned home with the folder hidden beneath the passenger seat.
She didn’t tell Emma everything.
She didn’t want to frighten her.
Instead, she asked one question.
“Emma, when did Helena first mention being scared of Dad?”
Emma thought.
“About a month ago.”
“What happened?”
“She said Dad had asked her questions.”
“What questions?”
“About her mom.”
“Like what?”
Emma looked uncomfortable.
“He wanted to know if her mom talked about him.”
Laura felt a chill.
“Anything else?”
“He asked if Helena had seen anything in his car.”
Laura closed her eyes.
That confirmed it.
Mark knew Helena had discovered something.
He had been trying to find out what she knew.
And when he realized she might tell Emma, he used the birthday party to separate them.
Not because Emma was the problem.
Because Emma was the person Helena trusted most.
Confronting Mark
Mark came home that evening at seven.
Laura was sitting at the kitchen table.
The folder was in front of her.
He saw it.
His face changed.
“What is that?”
Laura looked directly at him.
“Something you should have told me two years ago.”
Mark didn’t move.
“Where did you get it?”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“It absolutely matters.”
“No.”
