Laura’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

Emma leaned against her.

“I’m sorry.”

Laura kissed her forehead.

“You don’t have to be.”

“But I knew something was wrong.”

“I know.”

“I should’ve told you sooner.”

“You were trying to protect Helena.”

Emma nodded.

“She was scared.”

Laura hugged her.

“You did the right thing.”

The Birthday Party

The next afternoon was Helena’s birthday.

Emma didn’t want to go.

But around noon, Helena called.

“Emma?”

“Yeah?”

“Please come.”

“I can’t.”

“My mom knows everything now.”

Emma looked at Laura.

Rachel had apparently told Helena that the truth was coming out.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“What about my dad?”

“He won’t be there.”

Emma looked at her mother.

Laura nodded.

“You can go.”

Emma smiled for the first time in days.

The party was smaller than originally planned.

There were no extravagant decorations.

No huge crowd.

Just close friends and family.

Emma arrived wearing a simple blue dress.

Helena ran toward her.

They hugged so tightly that both girls started laughing.

“I missed you.”

“It’s been three days.”

“Exactly.”

Emma smiled.

For a few minutes, everything felt normal.

Then Helena whispered:

“I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

“I found the file in your dad’s car.”

Emma’s smile disappeared.

“What was in it?”

“I don’t know everything.”

“Does my dad know?”

“I think he suspected.”

Emma looked toward the door.

“Are you scared?”

Helena shook her head.

“Not anymore.”

“Why?”

“Because my mom finally told the truth.”

Emma squeezed her hand.

“So did mine.”

The Adults Finally Speak

Rachel and Laura met privately in another room.

They compared everything they knew.

The stories matched.

Mark had told each woman a different version of reality.

To Laura, Rachel was simply someone he occasionally helped.

To Rachel, Laura was supposedly a distant wife whose marriage had already ended.

To Helena, Mark was a trusted adult who seemed to know how to solve problems.

To Emma, he was simply Dad.

He had built different versions of himself for different people.

And for years, no one had compared the stories.

Until two teenage girls did.

Laura finally understood something painful.

The problem had never been the birthday party.

The party had simply been the place where the lies became visible.

The Truth About “Help”

Over the following weeks, Laura learned more.

Mark had a habit of helping people.

At first glance, it seemed admirable.

He lent money.

He offered professional advice.

He introduced people to useful contacts.

He solved problems.

But there was always something attached.

A favor owed.

A secret expected.

A decision he wanted influence over.

His generosity had gradually become a form of control.

Rachel had depended on him during a difficult period.

That dependence made it easier for him to control the story.

Laura realized the same thing had happened inside their marriage.

Mark didn’t always order her around.

He didn’t need to.

He simply made decisions before she knew there was a decision to make.

Then he presented the result as though it were inevitable.

“It’s already handled.”
