An elderly man wearing a white chef’s jacket.
His hand was frozen in the air.
He wasn’t looking at the broken object.
He wasn’t looking at the kitchen staff.
He was staring directly at my mother.
His mouth was slightly open, as though he was trying to say a name he couldn’t quite believe.
“Sir?” one of the cooks asked.
“Sir, are you okay?”
The man didn’t answer.
He disappeared from the window.
Chloe rolled her eyes and straightened the menus on the counter.
“Some people just can’t be careful,” she muttered.
My mother looked confused.
“Something’s wrong,” she whispered.
Her fingers tightened around her cane.
“That man looked at me like…”
She stopped.
“Like what, Mom?”
She didn’t answer.
Then, suddenly, the kitchen doors flew open.
The elderly chef came rushing out.
For someone his age, he moved unbelievably fast.
His white jacket swung behind him as he hurried across the restaurant.
He almost collided with a waiter carrying glasses.
He didn’t notice.
He didn’t see anyone except my mother.
Three feet away from her, he stopped.
His eyes filled with tears.
His hands trembled.
“Maria?”
My mother’s knees almost gave out.
I grabbed her arm.
The chef whispered again.
“Maria?”
Then he slowly lowered himself to his knees.
Right there.
In front of the entire restaurant.
“Cara mia,” he whispered.
“I have searched for you all these years.”
My mother’s cane slipped from her hand and hit the floor.
“Giovanni?”
Her voice cracked.
“Is it really you?”
The old chef looked up at her.
“It is me.”
Tears rolled down his face.
“I came to this country looking for you.”
The entire restaurant fell silent.
“I built this place hoping, praying, that one day you would walk through that door.”
My mother covered her mouth.
She was crying.
But somehow, she looked younger than I had seen her in years.
“I thought you forgot me,” she whispered.
Giovanni shook his head.
“Never.”
His voice broke.
“Not one single day.”
I stood there frozen.
I had never seen my mother like that.
Not as my mother.
But as a woman who had lived an entire life before I was born—a life filled with dreams, heartbreak and memories I had never known existed.
Giovanni slowly stood, still holding her hand.
Then his expression changed as he looked toward Chloe.
“You.”
Chloe immediately went pale.
“I heard every word from the kitchen.”
Her mouth opened.
“Chef, I…”
“You told my first love that she looked cheap.”
The colour drained from Chloe’s face.
“I didn’t know who she was.”
Giovanni’s voice became firm.
“You did not need to know.”
He pointed toward the dining room.
“You needed to be kind.”
He walked behind the hostess stand and checked the reservation screen.
Then his face changed.
“Is this their reservation?”
Chloe looked down.
She nodded.
“Yes.”
Giovanni stared at her.
“Collect your things.”
Silence.
“You are finished here.”
Chloe opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
She walked away without another word.
Giovanni turned toward the staff.
“No guest is ever to be treated this way again.”
Everyone nodded.
Then he turned back to my mother.
His expression softened.
“Cara mia.”
He offered her his arm.
“Tonight, you sit at my table.”
A small smile appeared on his face.
“And I will cook for you myself.”
He led us toward the centre of the dining room.
Slowly, the guests began to clap.
At first, only a few people.
Then more.
Soon, the entire restaurant filled with applause.
My mother squeezed my hand beneath the tablecloth.
She smiled through her tears.
“I told you, sweetheart.”
She looked around the beautiful restaurant.
“I just wanted to feel at home again.”
And finally…
she did.
