"You don't have to understand. I'm asking you to respect my request."
She raised her eyebrows.
"You're seriously threatened by me wearing a towel?"
"No."
"Because if you trust Andrew—"
"Kayla."
"I'm just saying. This sounds like a husband problem, not a towel problem."
I stared at her.
"No. This is a problem with you repeatedly ignoring something I've asked you not to do."
That was when she smiled.
And what she said next completely changed how I understood her behavior.
Chapter 4: The Test I Never Agreed To
"Think of it as a test," Kayla announced.
For a moment, I genuinely thought I'd misunderstood her.
"A what?"
"A test."
She placed her coffee mug on the counter.
"If Andrew can be tempted just because another woman walks through the kitchen wearing a towel, wouldn't you rather know now?"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You're deliberately trying to tempt my husband?"
"No," she replied immediately. "I'm seeing whether he can be tempted."
"Those are not as different as you think."
She waved away my objection.
"If he fails, that's on him."
I stood there wondering how the conversation had reached this point.
My sister, whom I had welcomed into my home during one of the most difficult periods of her life, had somehow convinced herself that testing my marriage was an acceptable way to spend her recovery time.
And worse, she seemed to believe she was doing me a favor.
I folded my arms.
"And what happens when I ask my sister to stop doing something in my home?"
She rolled her eyes.
"You're making this way bigger than it is."
That response told me something important.
Kayla wasn't interested in whether I felt uncomfortable. She was interested in whether she could justify continuing to do whatever she wanted.
The issue was no longer whether Andrew noticed her.
The issue was whether my sister believed she had to respect anyone's boundaries unless she personally agreed with them.
That evening, I told Andrew everything.
He was loading the dishwasher when I explained that Kayla had admitted she was deliberately testing his loyalty.
He stopped moving for several seconds.
"She actually used the word 'test'?"
"Twice."
He slowly pushed the lower dishwasher rack back into place.
Then he sighed.
"I'll stay out of it."
"Why?"
"She's your sister."
At the time, his answer sounded reasonable.
Three days later, I would understand why it wasn't.
Chapter 5: Andrew's Unexpected Response
Sunday morning began like any other.
I was preparing breakfast, buttering toast while Andrew sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee.
Then I heard Kayla coming downstairs.
She appeared in the doorway wearing the same towel.
Same bare feet.
Same complete disregard for everything we'd discussed.
I put down the butter knife.
"Kayla..."
Before I could continue, Andrew gently touched my wrist.
"Hang on."
I turned toward him.
He stood, carried his coffee mug to the counter, and looked directly at my sister.
"Let me answer this one."
Kayla smiled.
"Finally!"
