Nigerian Teen Spends Three Years Building His Own Drivable Mercedes G-Wagon-Inspired Car

A Nigerian teenager spent roughly three years turning an ambitious idea into something few people around him expected to see: a working, homemade vehicle inspired by one of the world's most recognizable luxury SUVs.

And this was not simply a model built to sit in a garage or look impressive in photographs.

It could actually drive.

Chukwudi Godday Eze, a young innovator from Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria, attracted widespread attention after constructing his own G-Wagon-inspired vehicle using locally available materials, adapted mechanical components and the practical skills he developed largely through experimentation.

What makes the story especially remarkable is the path that brought him there. Eze did not begin the project as a professionally trained automotive engineer working inside a sophisticated research facility. He did not have an automobile manufacturer's production line behind him, nor did he have access to the vast engineering resources used to develop modern production vehicles.

Instead, he was a young, self-taught builder with a fascination for machines, an idea that seemed extraordinarily ambitious and a willingness to keep working when success was far from guaranteed.

A Childhood Fascination With Building Things

Eze's G-Wagon-inspired vehicle did not appear out of nowhere.

Accounts of his story describe an interest in vehicles that began when he was much younger. He experimented with making small cars and later attempted increasingly ambitious projects. Nigerian outlet Legit.ng reported in 2023 that Eze said he was self-taught and had previously made a tricycle and a vehicle resembling a Lexus before completing the larger G-Wagon-style project.

Those earlier experiments were important.

Building even a basic moving vehicle requires a combination of mechanical understanding, fabrication skills and repeated problem-solving. A builder must think about how a frame will carry weight, how wheels will be positioned, how power will reach those wheels and how numerous separate components will function together.

For someone learning outside a formal engineering program, many of those lessons have to be discovered practically.

That means trying something, seeing whether it works, identifying the problem when it does not, modifying the design and trying again.

Eze's development appears to have followed exactly that kind of hands-on path.

According to a 2023 profile published by The African Dream, Eze recalled making small cars during childhood but initially doubting whether he could take his ideas much further. Eventually, he decided to try.

That decision ultimately became a three-year undertaking.

Three Years of Trial and Error

Reports about Eze's project say he spent approximately three years developing the G-Wagon-inspired vehicle, beginning the work while he was still a teenager.

That timeline matters because the finished vehicle can make the process appear deceptively simple.

It was not.

A homemade automobile is not one object. It is a collection of interconnected systems that have to work together well enough for the vehicle to move.

There is a structural frame. There are wheels and steering components. There is an engine and a method of supplying it with fuel. There must be a way of transferring power and controlling the vehicle. Body panels have to be shaped and attached. Seats and controls must be positioned so that a driver can actually operate it.

Then there is the inevitable process of correcting mistakes.

Recent reporting on Eze's work describes years of experimentation, persistence and practical problem-solving behind the prototype. Africa.com, republishing reporting from Global South World in August 2026, described him as a self-taught innovator without formal engineering qualifications who designed and assembled the vehicle himself.

The result is especially striking when compared with the environment in which commercial automobiles are normally created.

Major manufacturers employ teams specializing in mechanical engineering, electronics, aerodynamics, materials, manufacturing, software, safety and testing. A modern production vehicle can pass through years of development before reaching customers.

Eze was obviously not attempting to reproduce that industrial process.

His achievement belongs to a very different category: grassroots fabrication.

He wanted to find out whether he could take an idea, assemble the resources available to him and make a recognizable automobile that moved under its own power.

Eventually, he did.

Why a G-Wagon?

The inspiration for the exterior is immediately recognizable.

Eze's vehicle borrows the squared-off silhouette associated with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, popularly called the G-Wagon. The genuine G-Class has become both a luxury status symbol and one of the automotive industry's most distinctive designs.

But Eze's creation should not be confused with a factory-built Mercedes-Benz.

It is more accurately described as a homemade vehicle or prototype inspired by the G-Wagon's appearance.
