Neighbors interviewed after the shooting described Chandler as visibly upset after learning about the allegations involving the child.

That tension lies at the center of the case.
A parent may feel an overwhelming desire to protect a child.
But American criminal law does not generally allow individuals to decide for themselves that another person deserves to be punished and then carry out that punishment.
The justice system exists precisely because allegations must be investigated and evidence must be evaluated through legal procedures.
Chandler's case illustrates how quickly grief, anger and fear can collide with the law.

Whether that explanation ultimately satisfies the legal requirements for self-defense or another defense is a question for the courts.
At the same time, the allegations against Gonzalez are serious enough that prosecutors moved forward with multiple felony charges.
This creates an uncomfortable reality: two different legal questions can be true at the same time.
The allegations against Gonzalez can be extremely serious, and Chandler can still face criminal consequences for how he responded.
The existence of one investigation does not automatically erase the other.
