The Lynnwood Hygiene Center's role extends beyond bathing.
The City of Lynnwood lists showers, hygiene products, clothing and nightly dinners among the services available there.
NPR reported that visitors can wash clothes, get a hot meal and spend time indoors. Medical services have also been offered through a mobile clinic.
The center therefore functions as a point of contact.
That matters because homelessness can make even simple services difficult to navigate.
A person without reliable transportation, a permanent address, regular internet access or a working phone may struggle to connect with institutions that are theoretically available to help.
A familiar physical location can become an anchor.
People know where it is.
They know when they can go there.
They know they will be treated as guests rather than as problems to be moved elsewhere.
And sometimes that consistency can create opportunities for connections to additional assistance.
The Meaning of a Shower
Steves' intervention also drew attention to something easy to overlook: hygiene is closely tied to dignity.
Most people do not think of a shower as an extraordinary event.
It is simply part of the day.
But access to hygiene affects how people feel about themselves and how they are perceived by others.
Earlier reporting on the Lynnwood Hygiene Center illustrated this clearly.
In 2023, the Lynnwood Times interviewed Amberlee Bell, who had initially used the center's services while experiencing homelessness before becoming involved in its operation.
She described the center as essential and said it helped her stay clean while also giving her a sense of purpose and worth.
That testimony reveals why places like the Lynnwood Hygiene Center matter beyond the physical services they provide.
Being able to wash yourself is physical.
Being able to put on clean clothing is physical.
But feeling presentable enough to walk into an appointment, speak with an employer or simply exist in public without embarrassment can also have a psychological and social dimension.
The center gives people a place to take care of themselves.
Sometimes dignity begins with something that simple.
The Community Joined In
Steves' purchase solved the biggest immediate problem: securing the property.
But he wasn't the only person who contributed.
Once the center's situation became widely known, donations arrived from other members of the community and from supporters farther away.
NPR reported that approximately $400,000 in additional donations was raised, with the money intended for renovations and expanded services.
Local outlet My Lynnwood News reported donations coming from several states, including Oregon, Montana, Texas, Michigan, Indiana and Florida.
The response meant the story became bigger than one wealthy donor buying a building.
Steves' purchase gave the center security.
Other donors gave it resources to improve.
And organizations that had supported the center over the years continued playing important roles.
Verdant Health Commission, for example, said in December 2025 that it had been the hygiene center's lead funder since 2021 and had invested $1 million in the program.
That broader history matters.
The center did not suddenly appear when Rick Steves discovered it.
Staff members, volunteers, nonprofit organizations, health agencies and donors had been sustaining its work for years.
Steves' intervention protected what they had built.
From Possible Closure to Expansion
Once the property was secure, attention began shifting from survival to improvement.
The question was no longer simply:
"How do we keep this place from closing?"
It became:
"What could this place become?"
By February 2026, Steves was discussing plans with the Lynnwood City Council to improve the facility.
Local reporting described his vision of turning the hygiene center into what he called a "little oasis," with more washers, dryers, showers, toilets and related resources.
