She Asked for Bread, But Didn’t Eat It – The Reason That Shocked the Baker

Nazim's bakery had gained widespread popularity and was always in high demand. Customers of all ages adored the delicious baked treats. For the young patrons, Nazim often offered discounts, which were met with gratitude from their parents and smiles from

Nazim, along with his family, had come to Russia many years ago, following the collapse of his home country, which was plagued by riots and soaring unemployment. He spent many years working as a road worker and janitor until one day, he found himself in a café specializing in Eastern cuisine. To his surprise, the bakery items there were unlike anything he had tasted before, mainly because there were few skilled bakers in his homeland.

This experience sparked an idea in Nazim's mind: to open a small bakery where he and his wife, Fatima, could bring delicious Eastern-style baked goods to their customers. The road to realizing this dream was not easy, but thanks to his determination and hard work, Nazim achieved his goal. Years passed since his first bun came out of the oven, and during that time, Nazim became both a father and a grandfather.

A kind-hearted and generous man, Nazim loved children and often gave out treats to the little ones for free, believing that children were the true joy of life. He also fed stray animals and supported the local animal shelter. Nazim considered dogs and cats to be as loyal and valuable as human friends, and he felt fulfilled if he could save even one stray life. Every morning, he began his day by feeding a couple of stray dogs and a scruffy old British cat, cruelly abandoned by its owners.

While Fatima was busy baking fresh buns and pies, Nazim took a tray of yesterday's leftovers outside to feed the animals.

"Don’t rush, my dear ones! There’s enough for everyone," Nazim gently called as the animals eagerly ate.

Just then, someone softly touched his shoulder and asked in a quiet voice:

"Could I have a piece of bread, too?"

Nazim turned around and, to his surprise, saw a small girl, no older than ten, holding out her hand to him.

"You want some of yesterday's bread? Here, take a fresh bun straight from the tray! Would you like one?" Nazim asked, his heart aching at the sight of the pale, thin girl.

"Sorry, Uncle... I don't have enough money to buy anything," the girl said, her voice tinged with guilt as she looked down at the small handful of coins in her hand.

"What are you talking about? Money? Just take it! I have a grandson your age... What kind of person would I be if I took money from you?" Nazim replied warmly and headed inside, opening the door to fetch something for her.

He returned with a paper bag filled with fresh buns and pies, and, after a moment's thought, added a couple of peaches and a sweet apple.

"Here, take this... If you're hungry, you can sit on the bench and eat slowly," Nazim suggested kindly.

"Thank you, Uncle, but I really need to go," the girl said, her voice soft, her smile faint as she clutched the bag of food to her chest and began to walk towards the town square.

"Look at her, so young, and already walking the streets alone… That's not right," Fatima said, tears springing to her eyes.

At that moment, Nazim felt a sudden unease about the little girl. Driven by an emotional impulse, he removed his apron, promising Fatima he'd be back soon. With a quick wave to his wife, he hurried after the girl.

Though she was just a child, Nazim only caught up to her at the square. He was about to call out when, to his shock, a large dog ran toward her.

"Lucky, Lucky, come here, boy! Look what I have for you!" the girl called happily, pulling out a fresh bun from the bag.

The dog trotted over and, upon reaching his young owner, froze and wagged his tail excitedly.

"I missed you, good boy... Didn't I say I'd be back soon?" the girl said, stroking the dog’s thick fur.

After the dog devoured the bun, the girl approached a folding chair by a tree, next to a shoe box and a small rubber ball. It seemed she had left the dog to guard her belongings while she fetched food.

Despite her appearance, it was clear the girl was just as hungry as the dog.

"Well, Lucky… Ready? Let’s begin!" the girl said, picking up the rubber ball and tossing it high into the air.

The dog jumped up, snatched the ball mid-air, and then stood on his hind legs to return it to his mistress. They continued with various tricks, drawing the attention of passersby. Nazim, standing nearby, whistled in admiration and nodded approvingly.

Soon, a crowd gathered around, clapping and laughing as they watched the impressive performance. The duo worked together as if they shared a deep connection, and their seamless coordination captivated the audience. The show lasted about ten minutes, filled with cheers and applause from the spectators.

At the end of the performance, the girl and her dog bowed, then began walking around with the shoe box to collect donations. People, moved by the display, eagerly dropped coins and small bills into the box.

Seeing this, Nazim felt a deep emotion swell within him. He walked forward, his hand reaching for his wallet. With respect for the girl and her dog, he emptied his wallet into the box, including a couple of thousand-ruble notes and a handful of small coins.

When the girl saw the money, she looked up at him, surprised.

"Uncle, you must be mistaken… There's too much here... You’ve already helped us with food," she said, her voice filled with disbelief.

"Take it, take it… You earned it. You and Lucky were amazing! Just like a magician!" Nazim exclaimed, pushing her hand away when she tried to return the large bills.

The girl smiled sweetly and gave a little bow, before placing the box in her backpack and folding the chair.

"Well, that’s all, Lucky and I need to go home," she said matter-of-factly, attaching a leash to the dog’s collar before heading toward a nearby apartment complex.

For a moment, Nazim thought it would be nice to walk the girl home to make sure she got there safely. To his surprise, she agreed, and as they walked, she shared her story with him.

Her name was Nastya, and she lived with her mother in the nearby high-rise building.

Nazim was deeply moved. "What kind of mother lets her child do something like this?" he thought, touched by the girl's situation.

But Nastya seemed unfazed by her circumstances and told him how two years ago, she had found a small puppy abandoned near a garbage bin. The puppy was just two weeks old, crying desperately for its mother. If not for the puppy's cries, Nastya might have missed it altogether.

She took the puppy home and nursed it back to health, eventually naming him Lucky.

During their conversation, Nazim learned that Nastya excelled in school and was a straight-A student, a fact that made him think of his own grandson, Ruslan, who struggled with his studies.

"Well, here we are… If you’d like, you can come inside for a visit. My mom would love to meet you!" Nastya offered, pointing to the entrance.

Though initially hesitant, Nazim couldn’t refuse the invitation when he saw her smiling face.

Inside, the woman introduced herself as Tatyana. She was blind, and the walls of the apartment were carefully navigated by Tatyana as she steadied herself with her hands.

Nazim’s heart sank as he realized the gravity of her situation. Tatyana had lost her sight in a car accident years ago, which also claimed her husband. Nastya had been spared, and she had been caring for her mother ever since.

The bakery owner learned that Nastya had been performing on the streets to raise money for her mother’s surgery. Nazim, deeply moved, promised to do everything he could to help.

The next day, with the help of his family, Nazim decided to offer Nastya a place to perform at his bakery. The show, performed by Nastya and Lucky, quickly drew the attention of customers, leading to a surge in sales.

Nazim’s bakery soon became a sensation, and the video of Nastya’s performance, recorded by his grandson Ruslan, went viral. Within days, the support for Nastya and her mother grew exponentially, and charitable foundations began offering assistance.

The necessary funds for Tatyana’s surgery were raised, and Nazim made arrangements for her to receive treatment abroad. Tatyana’s eyesight was restored, and soon after, she and Nastya returned home, greeted by a joyful reunion with Lucky.

Through the kindness and dedication of those around them, Nastya’s life was transformed. Nazim’s business flourished, and the story of this family, united by love and perseverance, became a symbol of hope for many.
