Taylor Swift Addresses Super Bowl Rumors and Engagement Talk During Playful ‘Tonight Show’ Interview
Published Oct. 7, 2025 | New York City
Taylor Swift finally silenced weeks of online speculation during her much-anticipated appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Monday night.
The 12-time Grammy winner joined host Jimmy Fallon to promote her newly released album, The Life of a Showgirl, and to talk about life with her fiancé, Travis Kelce — whom she affectionately called her “favorite person in the world.”
After Swift opened up about the inspiration behind her album’s glittering, jazz-infused sound, Fallon — ever the mischievous interviewer — pivoted to “the five biggest rumors on the internet” about her. “Taylor,” he began, grinning, “the Swifties are dying to know what’s true and what’s just fan fiction.”
Among the list of rumors Fallon read aloud:
-
That Swift turned down performing at the Super Bowl halftime show because the NFL wouldn’t grant her ownership of the performance footage.
-
That Ed Sheeran found out about her engagement to Kelce through Instagram rather than directly from Swift.
-
That Swift jokingly told Selena Gomez she was “not allowed” to get married before her.
-
That The Life of a Showgirl includes secret references to her ex, Joe Alwyn.
-
That she and Kelce are planning a private ceremony “somewhere in Tennessee.”
The “Fortnight” singer handled each one with her signature charm and wit.
“Well, first of all, I didn’t ‘turn down’ the Super Bowl,” Swift clarified with a smile. “Let’s just say we had conversations, and I decided the timing wasn’t right. Also, I don’t need to own footage to own my performance — I do that every night on tour.”
As for the claim about Ed Sheeran learning of her engagement on social media, Swift laughed:
“Oh, Ed definitely didn’t find out on Instagram. He was one of the first people I called — right after my parents, obviously. He’s like my brother.”
She then playfully confirmed the long-running engagement rumors, flashing a subtle glance toward her diamond ring as the studio audience erupted in applause. Fallon jumped to his feet, exclaiming, “So that’s a yes?!” to which Swift responded, “That’s a sparkly yes.”
On the subject of Gomez, Swift brushed off the viral “wedding race” rumors, saying:
“Selena and I have been joking about who’d get married first for, like, 15 years. Whoever does, the other one’s maid of honor — that’s the deal.”
Swift’s segment also included a live performance of Showgirl, the title track from her album, which she described as “a love letter to confidence, resilience, and putting on a show no matter what’s happening behind the curtain.” (Billboard, Oct. 2025).
Fallon later praised the record as her “most cinematic” to date, while Variety noted that the album “leans into lush storytelling and theatrical flair reminiscent of vintage Broadway mixed with modern pop.” (Variety, Oct. 2025).
Fans online were quick to celebrate the singer’s candor, with #TaylorOnFallon trending within minutes of the episode airing. One fan wrote on X, “She didn’t just drop hints — she dropped truth bombs with sparkle.”
Swift’s publicist confirmed to People that The Life of a Showgirl has already broken first-week streaming records on Spotify, surpassing 500 million streams globally since its release on Oct. 4.
As Fallon wrapped the segment, he said, “You always know how to give us the truth — and the show.” Swift replied with a laugh, “It’s literally in the title, Jimmy.”
