The Extraordinary Survival Story of Bahia Bakari: The Sole Survivor of Yemenia Flight 626

In 2009, the world witnessed one of the most astonishing survival stories in modern aviation history. A 12-year-old girl named Bahia Bakari became the only survivor of Yemenia Flight 626, a tragic crash that claimed the lives of 152 passengers and crew. The aircraft went down in the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands during its final approach to Moroni. What followed was a night of unimaginable fear, endurance, and sheer will to live.

According to BBC News, The Guardian, Reuters, and the BEA (Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety), Bahia’s survival is considered nothing short of miraculous.

12-year-old Bahia Bakari was the sole survivor of a plane crash in the Indian Ocean that killed her mom & 151 others. She had little swimming experience & no life vest. So

A Tragic Accident Over the Indian Ocean

Yemenia Flight 626 departed from Sana’a, Yemen, on June 30, 2009. As the plane attempted to land amid poor weather conditions, it crashed into the Indian Ocean just off the coast of the Comoros Islands. Rescue teams later confirmed that the violent impact left no survivors—except for one: a young girl fighting alone in the darkness of the sea.

Investigations conducted by BEA France reported that turbulence, pilot error, and stall warnings contributed to the fatal accident, making Bahia’s survival even more extraordinary.

Thrown Into the Sea Without a Life Jacket

Bahia Bakari could not swim. When the aircraft broke apart, she was thrown into rough waters, surrounded by crashing waves and floating wreckage. With no life jacket, no light, and no idea what had happened, she clung to a piece of debris—desperately holding on through the long, terrifying night.

She later told investigators that the ocean was “like being in a washing machine,” a sentiment echoed in her interviews reported by The Guardian.

Nine Hours of Strength, Fear, and Survival

Despite her injuries and exhaustion, Bahia survived over nine hours alone in the Indian Ocean. Throughout the night, she battled:

  • Strong, relentless waves

  • Cold water and total darkness

  • Physical pain from fractures and bruises

  • The fear that she would slip away and drown

When rescuers aboard a passing boat discovered her the next morning, she was barely conscious—shivering, dehydrated, and clinging to life.

Doctors later described her survival as “a miracle,” emphasizing that surviving a high-impact ocean crash, especially without flotation support or swimming ability, is almost impossible.

A Story That Moved the World

Bahia became known in the press as “La Miraculée” (“The Miracle Girl”). The President of France and leaders from the Comoros Islands publicly praised her courage. Trauma specialists noted that her determination to stay awake and cling to debris played a critical role in her survival.

Her story is frequently cited in aviation history as one of the rare cases where a lone survivor emerges from a large-scale crash—joining the likes of Vesna Vulović and Juliane Koepcke.

The Legacy of Bahia Bakari’s Survival

Bahia later released a memoir titled “Moi Bahia, la miraculée” (“I Bahia, the Miracle Girl”), describing her experience and emotional recovery. Her survival continues to inspire millions around the world and serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience and the extraordinary strength found in the most desperate moments.

Her story stands as:

  • A symbol of hope

  • A testament to courage under impossible circumstances

  • A reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and survival
