For Elena, the hardest moment began high above the ground, on a night flight cutting through the dark sky, surrounded only by tired strangers who wanted silence. It all started with the baby’s crying.

Lucia suddenly began to cry loudly, and the sound immediately cut through the sleepy hum of the cabin. Several passengers shifted in their seats, someone sighed in annoyance, and others turned around.

Elena pulled her daughter closer and began rocking her gently in her arms, whispering soothing words. But the little girl would not calm down. Her tiny face was red from crying, her lips trembled, and her small fingers clutched the edge of the blanket.

Elena felt everything inside her tighten with helplessness. She had not slept for almost two days. The last few days had turned into a blur of fear, hospitals, tests, anxious conversations, and tears.

Lucia was sick, and the local doctors could only shrug, advising Elena to go to a famous pediatrician who lived in another country, four hours away by plane. They said he might be the only one who could help her daughter. That was why Elena was on this flight. She had spent almost all the money she had just to get there.

Lucia cried out again, even louder, and irritation swept through the cabin. The man in front of her turned around with a dark expression. A woman across the aisle shook her head. Someone said it loudly enough for Elena to hear: — People should not even be allowed to fly with babies.

Elena’s face burned with shame. She wanted to disappear through the floor. She tried to rock her daughter, adjusted the blanket, kissed her forehead, whispered to her, but exhaustion had already become stronger than everything else. Her vision blurred, her hands trembled, and her head grew heavy. Even a flight attendant approached her with strained politeness and quietly said that passengers were complaining.

Elena only nodded, because she had no strength left to explain anything. She sat there holding Lucia tightly, feeling that she simply could not go on anymore.

At some point, her eyelids closed on their own. She did not even notice how her head slowly came to rest on the shoulder of the man beside her. She no longer cared whether it was uncomfortable for him, because her body gave up before she did.

She fell asleep. The man next to her frowned and looked at the poor mother with irritation. But then he did something that shocked the entire plane.

When Elena suddenly opened her eyes an hour later, at first she did not even understand what was happening. The cabin was quiet. The plane still hummed as before, passengers were dozing, some were scrolling through their phones, others were looking out the window, but that was not the most important thing.

Lucia was no longer crying.

With fear and confusion, Elena turned to the side and saw that her daughter was sleeping peacefully in the arms of that very man whose shoulder she had fallen asleep on.

He was holding the child confidently and gently, one hand supporting her back and the other lightly touching her tiny hand. Lucia was sleeping soundly.

Elena straightened up abruptly. — Oh God… I’m sorry… I’m so sorry… — she breathed out.

But the man turned to her completely calmly. — It’s all right, — he said softly. — Your daughter was just very tired. And so were you.

Elena looked at him, still not fully awake, and then she noticed that all this time he had been watching Lucia not like a random passenger. His movements were too precise, too confident. He gave a faint smile, but there was neither mockery nor irritation in it.

— You’re flying to see a doctor, aren’t you? — he asked.

Elena felt her breath catch. — Yes… — she whispered. — A pediatrician. They told me only he can help my daughter.

The man was silent for a moment, then replied very calmly: — Then you do not need to look for him anymore. It’s me.

At first Elena thought she had misheard. She just stared at him, unable to say a single word. Then he told her his name, and in that moment her hands turned cold.

Tears immediately rolled down Elena’s cheeks, but no longer from exhaustion.

— I… I don’t understand… — was all she could say.

— I noticed the way she was crying, — the man said gently, looking at Lucia. — Babies that small often have a severe reaction to flying, especially when they are already weakened by illness. I just helped calm her down a little. Don’t worry, she’s all right for now. And when we land, I’ll examine your daughter myself.

Elena looked at him as if something impossible had happened right in front of her.

— But I… I barely managed to gather enough money for the trip, — she admitted in a trembling voice. — I don’t know how I’ll be able to pay for the appointment.

The man lowered his eyes to the sleeping Lucia and answered calmly: — You won’t have to pay anything. I’ll treat your daughter for free.
