Two Zodiac Signs Should Avoid Planting the ZZ Plant — Or Risk Wealth Flowing Away
In recent years, decorating homes with indoor plants has become a major trend, with the ZZ plant (also known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia or “money plant”) emerging as one of the most popular choices. People admire its lush green leaves and easy-to-maintain nature, but more importantly, they believe it attracts wealth and prosperity according to feng shui principles.
However, not everyone should keep a ZZ plant indoors. Feng shui experts warn that for individuals with certain zodiac signs and elemental traits, this plant could actually bring financial instability and energy imbalance instead of luck and growth.
The Feng Shui Foundation Behind the Belief
In feng shui, every individual has a personal energy field or “elemental destiny” (mệnh) based on their birth year — such as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. Each element interacts differently with plants and other natural forces, forming a system of mutual generation and restriction (ngũ hành tương sinh – tương khắc) (Feng Shui Today, 2023).
The ZZ plant, by nature, belongs to the Wood element, as it represents growth and upward movement. Its thick stems and rounded leaves also symbolize wealth and endurance, which is why it’s commonly placed in offices or living rooms to enhance fortune energy (Better Homes & Gardens, 2022).
Who Should Avoid Planting the ZZ Plant?
While people with Wood and Fire elements are believed to thrive with the ZZ plant — symbolizing a boost in energy, motivation, and success — those with Earth and Water elements should avoid it.
According to feng shui theory, Wood restrains Earth, meaning individuals with the Earth element may experience financial leaks or obstacles when surrounded by excessive Wood energy. In practical terms, this imbalance may manifest as money flowing out faster than it comes in — a warning often summarized as “wealth flowing away like water.”
Meanwhile, those with a Water element may also struggle, as Wood draws nourishment from Water. This relationship can lead to exhaustion, stress, or even health issues if a ZZ plant is kept improperly (Chinese Metaphysics Insights, 2024).
If a Water-element person insists on growing a ZZ plant, feng shui practitioners recommend opting for a hydroponic version — placing the plant in water rather than soil — to harmonize the energy balance.
The Yin–Yang Effect
The ZZ plant carries a strong yang (positive) energy that attracts fortune. But for those with an already high yang balance, introducing another strong yang element can disrupt harmony. This yin–yang imbalance may subtly influence mood, health, or even relationships over time (South China Morning Post, 2023).
Maintaining energy equilibrium in one’s home environment is essential. Experts suggest balancing the strong energy of a ZZ plant with softer, yin-oriented elements — such as water features, stones, or calming blue tones in décor.
Effects on Health and Prosperity
Planting a feng shui-incompatible species may lead to financial strain, fatigue, or a restless atmosphere in the home. Over time, this imbalance can manifest as poor concentration, anxiety, or recurring obstacles in work and family life.
“Feng shui is not magic — it’s about energy flow,” says feng shui consultant Lillian Too (Feng Shui World Magazine, 2023). “When the energy of a person clashes with the energy of their environment, problems often appear subtly, through mood, health, or luck.”
Better Alternatives for Certain Signs
For those with the Earth or Water element, alternatives such as lucky bamboo, jade plant, or peace lily are considered better options. These plants promote calm, balance, and prosperity without conflicting with personal destiny energy.
A Matter of Balance and Awareness
Ultimately, whether or not one chooses to plant the ZZ plant, the key is awareness and moderation. Plants are living energy sources, and choosing them should align not only with aesthetic taste but also with feng shui compatibility.
By understanding one’s elemental destiny and selecting plants accordingly, individuals can foster a home that radiates harmony, balance, and abundance — instead of draining it away.
