For more than two decades, the Fast & Furious franchise has built much of its identity around one word: family.
On screen, Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto has repeatedly insisted that loyalty matters more than blood, money or circumstance. Away from the cameras, Diesel’s relationship with the daughter of his late friend and co-star Paul Walker has become one of the clearest real-life examples of that idea.
In August 2026, while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the original The Fast and the Furious, Diesel spoke publicly about just how close he remains to Paul’s daughter, Meadow Walker.
Meadow, now 27, is not simply someone Diesel checks on occasionally because her father was his friend. According to the actor, she has become deeply integrated into his own family.
“She’s the first one to ever call me on Father’s Day,” Diesel told Entertainment Tonight at the anniversary celebration, according to reports from NBC/TODAY and E! News. He added that Meadow is also the first to appear for his children’s birthdays and described her as “a true cousin” to his children. Then he summed up the depth of his feelings in the strongest possible terms: “I would die for her.”
The statement attracted attention because it sounded so absolute.
But for anyone who has followed the relationship between Diesel, Paul Walker and their families, it was not entirely surprising.
For more than a decade after Paul Walker’s death, Diesel has continued showing up for Meadow at important moments in her life. He is her godfather. He famously accompanied her down the aisle at her 2021 wedding. She, in turn, remains close to Diesel’s children and continues appearing alongside members of the Fast & Furious cast.
What began as a friendship between two actors eventually became something much larger: an extended family that continued after one of them was gone.
A Friendship That Began With The Fast and the Furious
Vin Diesel and Paul Walker became globally associated with one another after starring together in 2001’s The Fast and the Furious.
Diesel played Dominic Toretto, the Los Angeles street racer whose fierce loyalty to his chosen family defined the character. Walker played Brian O’Conner, an undercover police officer who entered Dom’s world and gradually became part of it.
The first movie was considerably smaller in scale than the global action franchise that followed.
There were street races, modified cars and relatively modest stakes. But at the center of the story was the evolving relationship between Dom and Brian.
That relationship eventually became the emotional foundation of the franchise.
Over multiple films, Diesel and Walker’s characters went from adversaries to allies and ultimately brothers in everything but blood.
Off screen, a genuine friendship developed as well.
When Paul died in November 2013, Diesel repeatedly referred to him not simply as a co-star but as his brother.
CNN documented Diesel’s visit to the crash site shortly after Walker’s death. Addressing fans who had gathered there, Diesel thanked them for showing Paul how much he had been loved. In another message reported by CNN, Diesel described Walker as a brother both “on and off screen.”
That language was not merely part of promoting a franchise built around fictional family.
Years later, Diesel would continue talking about Walker in deeply personal terms.
At the 25th-anniversary celebration in 2026, Diesel referred to Paul by his affectionate nickname, “Pablo,” while remembering standing alongside him at the original film’s premiere.
The anniversary was therefore more emotionally complicated than an ordinary Hollywood reunion.
It marked a quarter-century since the movie that changed their lives—but one of the two men who had stood at the center of that story was no longer there.
The Loss That Changed the Franchise
Paul Walker died on November 30, 2013, at the age of 40.
He had been attending an event connected to his humanitarian organization, Reach Out Worldwide, when he left in a Porsche Carrera GT driven by his friend Roger Rodas. The vehicle crashed in Santa Clarita, California, and both men died.
Contemporary CNN reporting confirmed that Walker was the passenger rather than the driver and that the gathering he had attended was intended to benefit victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
More recent reporting from PEOPLE notes that investigators determined excessive speed was involved in the crash and that Walker died from traumatic and thermal injuries.
At the time, Walker was in the middle of making Furious 7.
His death confronted the filmmakers with a painful question: how could a franchise so closely associated with friendship and family continue after losing one of its central actors?
Production was eventually completed with assistance from Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody, along with visual-effects work.
Director James Wan later explained that the brothers helped perform scenes needed to complete Paul’s role. CNN reported that a large majority of Walker’s material had already been filmed before his death.
The finished movie did not kill Brian O’Conner.
Instead, the filmmakers gave him a peaceful exit from the dangerous lifestyle that had defined much of the series.
For audiences, the final sequence of Furious 7, in which Dom and Brian drive side by side before their roads separate, became one of the franchise’s most emotional moments.
But for Diesel, Walker’s absence was not simply a storytelling problem.
He had lost someone he considered family.
And Paul had left behind a daughter who was only 15 years old.
Meadow Was Paul Walker’s Only Child
Meadow Walker was born on November 4, 1998, to Paul Walker and Rebecca Soteros.
According to PEOPLE, she spent much of her early childhood in Hawaii before eventually moving to California to live with her father. She and Paul developed a close relationship during the years preceding his death.
Paul had also chosen Diesel to be Meadow’s godfather.
That role would acquire enormous significance after 2013.
A godparent can be largely ceremonial in some families. In Diesel and Meadow’s case, however, the relationship continued into adulthood and became increasingly visible.
Diesel did not attempt to replace Paul.
His public comments instead suggest something different: he remained present as someone who had loved Meadow’s father and who continued considering her part of the larger family their friendship had created.
Meadow reciprocated.
As Diesel explained in August 2026, she calls him on Father’s Day.
She attends his children’s birthdays.
And she has developed her own relationship with his three children—Hania, Vincent and Pauline.
E! News reported that Diesel called Meadow “a true cousin” to them.

Diesel’s Youngest Daughter Carries Paul’s Name
Perhaps one of the strongest earlier indications of how much Walker meant to Diesel came in 2015.
Diesel and his longtime partner Paloma Jiménez welcomed their third child, a daughter.
They named her Pauline.
The name was chosen in honor of Paul Walker.
In a CNN report surrounding the release of Furious 7, Diesel explained that Walker had once given him advice about being present for the birth of his children. When Diesel was later cutting his newborn daughter’s umbilical cord, he found himself thinking about Paul.
When it came time to choose her name, “Pauline” felt natural.
Diesel summarized the relationship bluntly: “I don’t have friends. I’ve got family.”
The decision tied Walker’s memory directly to Diesel’s household.
Years later, when Diesel describes Meadow as a cousin to his children, that connection therefore has a deeper history.
One of those children literally carries Paul’s name.
Walking Meadow Down the Aisle
One of the most widely shared images illustrating the Diesel-Meadow relationship came in 2021.
Meadow married actor Louis Thornton-Allan during an intimate ceremony in the Dominican Republic.
Vogue, which documented the wedding, reported that the celebration took place with a relatively small group of family and friends. Meadow wore custom Givenchy Haute Couture for the ceremony.
Paul could not be there to accompany his daughter.
Diesel was.
Images from the ceremony showed him walking beside Meadow as she made her way down the aisle.
PEOPLE has repeatedly identified Diesel as Meadow’s godfather and documented his role during the wedding.
The photographs quickly circulated around the world.
For fans who had watched Diesel and Walker call each other brothers, the moment carried obvious symbolism.
