Yellowed, burnt stainless steel pots can be soaked in this water and will shine like new

How to Clean Stainless Steel Pots and Pans Effectively
After being used for a while, stainless steel cookware often develops yellow stains or even stubborn black burn marks. These stains not only make the cookware look unattractive but can also affect your cooking experience. Fortunately, there are several simple yet effective methods you can use to restore the shine of your stainless steel pots, pans, and utensils.
Cleaning Stainless Steel with Dish Soap, Baking Soda, and Vinegar
Over time, stainless steel items such as pots, pans, steamers, or even spoons and ladles can become stained and lose their original luster. While dishwashing liquid is usually the first solution many people turn to, it is often not powerful enough to completely remove these tough stains. To achieve better results, you should combine dish soap with baking soda and white vinegar.
Here’s how you can do it:
-
Take the largest pot or pan you own to prepare the cleaning solution.
-
Add 4–5 tablespoons of baking soda, half a bottle of white vinegar, a few drops of dishwashing liquid, and enough water to fully submerge the stainless steel items.
-
Place the stained cookware into the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.
Boiling the solution allows the heat and cleaning agents to break down the burnt residue, making the cleaning process much easier. Once the solution has boiled for a few minutes, turn off the stove and let the items soak as the water cools down. After soaking, use a sponge or dishcloth to gently scrub the surface. You will notice that the stains come off much faster, leaving the stainless steel bright and shiny again.
For particularly stubborn stains, mix additional baking soda and vinegar with a small amount of water, pour the mixture directly into the pot, and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. This will loosen the toughest residues, making it easier to scrub them away without damaging the surface.
Cleaning with Dishwasher Tablets or Powder

Another highly effective method is to use dishwasher tablets or powder. These products contain active oxygen-based cleaning agents designed to break down grease, food residue, and burnt stains.
Instructions:
-
Fill your stainless steel pot with 1–2 liters of boiling water.
-
Drop in a dishwasher tablet (or add a spoonful of dishwasher powder).
-
Let the pot soak for at least 1–2 hours if the stains are light. For tougher, older stains, leave it overnight.
After soaking, you will find that the stains have loosened significantly and can be scrubbed off with minimal effort. This method works not only for pots and pans but also for other stainless steel items like steamers, strainers, or even flatware.
The advantage of using dishwasher tablets or powder is that they are easy to find, simple to use, and safe for stainless steel. Regardless of the brand, these products will help restore the shine of your cookware effectively.
Additional Tips for Maintaining Stainless Steel Cookware
-
Avoid using steel wool: While it may remove stains, it can also scratch the surface of your cookware. Use a soft sponge instead.
-
Rinse thoroughly: After cleaning with vinegar, baking soda, or dishwasher tablets, rinse the cookware well with clean water to remove any residue.
-
Dry immediately: Wipe your stainless steel items dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots and maintain their shine.
-
Prevent stains before they form: Avoid leaving food stuck to the pot for too long. Soaking the pot right after cooking can save you from tougher cleaning later.
By combining these cleaning methods and following the extra care tips, you can extend the life of your stainless steel cookware and keep it looking as good as new. With just a few common household ingredients and a little effort, your pots, pans, and utensils will stay clean, shiny, and ready for everyday cooking.
