You’re Doing Laundry All Wrong — Here’s the Right Way to Do It

Laundry might feel like one of the simplest household chores, but many of us unknowingly make mistakes that damage clothes, waste energy, or leave garments less clean than they could be. Whether you’ve been doing laundry for years or you’re brand-new to it, understanding a few key rules can transform your results.

Below, you’ll find the most common laundry mistakes — and the right way to fix them — so your clothes last longer, look better, and come out cleaner.

1. Why Laundry Mistakes Matter

Little errors add up. Washing incorrectly can cause fading, shrinking, pilling, and weakened fibers. Over time, this shortens your clothes’ lifespan and costs you more money.

Mistakes also impact your washing machine. Too much detergent or overloaded drums lead to residue, poor cleaning, and even mechanical issues. Doing laundry right protects both your wardrobe and your appliance.

2. Sorting Laundry: It’s More Than Whites vs. Darks

Most people only sort by color — but that’s not enough.

You should also sort by:

  • Fabric type (e.g., towels vs. delicates)

  • Weight (heavy jeans vs. thin shirts)

  • Soil level (dirty gym clothes should not wash with lightly worn items)

Smarter sorting = cleaner clothes + less damage.

3. Choose the Right Detergent (and the Right Amount)

Pick detergents based on:

  • Fabric needs

  • Sensitivities or allergies

  • Stain removal strength

  • Whether you have a high-efficiency (HE) machine

Most people use way too much detergent. HE washers only need about 2 tablespoons for a full load. Too much creates buildup, leaves clothes stiff, and harms the machine.

4. Use Detergent Trays Correctly

Detergent trays are designed to:

  • Release detergent at the right time

  • Separate bleach from detergent

  • Add fabric softener during the rinse

Putting products in the wrong compartment reduces cleaning power and can cause residue. Always check your washer’s guide — every model is slightly different.

5. Master Your Washer Settings

Every setting matters:

  • Delicate cycle → fragile fabrics

  • Cold water → prevents shrinking and color bleeding

  • High spin → faster drying but harsher on clothes

Adjust settings based on fabric and soil level, not habit.

6. The Truth About Dryer Sheets

Dryer sheets reduce static, but overusing them can:

  • Coat fabrics with wax

  • Reduce absorbency (especially towels)

  • Clog your dryer filter

Better alternative: wool dryer balls
They reduce drying time, soften fabric, and add no residue.

7. Dry Fabrics Properly

Different fabrics need different drying methods:

  • Cotton → usually safe on medium/high heat

  • Synthetics & delicates → low heat

  • Wool & activewear → best air-dried

Air drying also reduces energy usage and prevents wear.

8. Fold Clothes at the Right Time

The best moment to fold clothes?
Right when they come out of the dryer.

Warm clothes fold smoother and resist wrinkles. If you can’t fold immediately, at least lay items flat to keep them neat.

9. Stop Overloading Your Washer

When the drum is too full:

  • Water and detergent can’t circulate

  • Clothes don’t agitate properly

  • Cleaning quality drops significantly

Fill the washer only ¾ full for the best results.

10. How to Use Vinegar & Baking Soda Properly

Both are great — if used correctly.

  • Vinegar → add during the rinse cycle (softens, removes odors)

  • Baking soda → add with detergent (boosts cleaning power)

Never use them together. They neutralize each other and become ineffective.

11. Don’t Overuse Fabric Softener

Fabric softener can:

  • Reduce absorbency (bad for towels!)

  • Leave residue

  • Damage athletic wear and synthetics

Use it sparingly — or replace it with vinegar or dryer balls.
