For 14-year-old Cody Chalmers of Chandler, Arizona, that moment arrived on an ordinary Friday night in 2025.
He was riding his bicycle when he noticed something lying in the street near Queen Creek Road and Arizona Avenue.
It was a wallet.
For many people, finding a wallet immediately raises a series of questions.
Who does it belong to?
How can it be returned?
Is there identification inside?
For someone else, however, another thought might come first: Is there any money in it?
There was.
The wallet contained a driver's license, credit cards, health insurance cards and approximately $300 in cash, according to its owner.
For a 14-year-old, $300 is hardly an insignificant amount of money.
It was especially significant for Cody.
He had been saving for months to buy something he desperately wanted: an off-road electric bike costing thousands of dollars.
Three hundred dollars could have moved him considerably closer to that goal.
And Cody could easily have told himself that no one had seen him find the wallet.
Instead, he made a different decision.
He decided to return everything.
Every card.
The wallet.
And every dollar.
That simple choice would soon set off a chain of events that Cody could never have predicted.
A Wallet in the Road
Arizona's Family, the Phoenix-area television news organization that reported the story in May 2025, said Cody was riding his bike on a Friday night when he spotted the wallet near Queen Creek Road and Arizona Avenue in Chandler.
His first reaction wasn't excitement about what might be inside.
He thought about the person who had lost it.
"I thought that someone would feel really bad if they lost it," Cody told Arizona's Family.
So he decided he needed to return it.
Finding the owner wasn't necessarily going to be simple.
But the wallet contained an important clue: a woman's identification.
Cody contacted his mother, Carrie Strecker, and sent her a photograph of the ID.
Then they began searching.
Using social media and public-record websites, they looked for contact information associated with the woman whose identification was inside the wallet.
Eventually, they found a phone number.
They had found the owner.
According to Cody, the woman told him she had lost the wallet only about 30 minutes before he discovered it.
She was relieved that Cody had found it before someone less honest did.
The wallet wasn't merely carrying cash.
It also held credit cards, insurance cards and identification — the kinds of things that can take hours, days or even weeks to replace.
Anyone who has ever lost a wallet knows the feeling.
First comes panic.
Then comes the frantic search through pockets, bags, cars and rooms.
Then the realization that the wallet may actually be gone.
After that comes the exhausting checklist: cancel the credit cards, contact the bank, replace the driver's license, replace insurance cards and worry about whether personal information might be misused.
Cody understood some of that anxiety better than most teenagers.
His father had lost a wallet years earlier.
Cody remembered how stressful the experience had been for him.
That memory stayed with him.
As Cody later explained to Arizona's Family, the experience taught him how damaging it can be to take another person's money because a wallet can contain so much of someone's everyday life.

There was another part of the story that made Cody's decision particularly meaningful to his mother.
Cody had been saving money.

According to Arizona's Family, the model Cody wanted carried a price tag of nearly $4,000.
