The woman walked slowly along a narrow, dusty path, dragging her feet with effort. On her back, she carried a bundle of firewood she had gathered in the forest. She had been collecting it since early morning to somehow prepare for winter. The sun was high, the air was scorching, and it was hard to breathe.

Her headscarf stuck to her head from sweat, her hands trembled from exhaustion. There was only a little water left in the small plastic bottle. She already imagined sitting on her doorstep, taking a sip, and catching her breath.

But suddenly, the woman stopped. Right in the middle of the path lay a snake.

It lay there strangely. It didn’t move, didn’t raise its head, didn’t try to crawl away. At first, fear gripped the woman. Her heart started pounding, and she even took a step back. In places like this, snakes are not uncommon, and many of them are dangerous.

She looked closer. The snake didn’t move.

It didn’t look like an attack. On the contrary, it seemed as if it didn’t even have the strength to lift itself. Its body was stretched out, its mouth slightly open, barely any movement.

The woman stood there, hesitating. Fear and pity fought inside her. She understood that one wrong move could cost her life. But at the same time, it was clear — this creature wasn’t attacking. It was dying.

She remembered the heat that had lasted for several days. It was hard for people, let alone animals.

— It probably just needs water… — she whispered quietly to herself.

The woman slowly took the bundle of firewood off her shoulders and carefully placed it on the ground. Then she took out her bottle. There was almost nothing left inside.

She looked at the snake again. It was still lying there, barely breathing.

Her heart tightened. She crouched down, keeping her distance. Her hand trembled, but she still opened the bottle and tilted it. A thin stream of water trickled down.

At first, nothing happened.

Then the snake moved slightly.

Its head slowly lifted, its tongue flicked faintly. It seemed to sense the moisture. The woman held her breath, afraid to even move. The water kept dripping.

The snake began cautiously reaching toward the stream. Its movements were slow and weak, but with each second they became more confident. It opened its mouth and began catching the drops.

The woman watched, forgetting her fear.

— Drink… — she said softly.

She poured out the water to the last drop. The bottle was empty. The snake was already holding its head higher. Something alive, alert appeared in its eyes. It no longer looked weak.

The woman noticed it.

And in that moment, something inside her tightened. She suddenly realized what she had done.

In front of her was no longer a dying snake. In front of her was a strong, living, dangerous predator. And she had just helped it recover.

The woman slowly began to step back, trying not to make any sudden movements. Her heart was beating faster and faster.

But it was already too late.

The snake rose up fully. Its body tensed. Its head swayed slightly from side to side.

And in that moment, the woman realized she could never have imagined how this act of kindness would end for her… The snake stood in front of her for a few more seconds, gently swaying its head, as if thinking. The woman didn’t breathe, afraid even to blink. But instead of striking, the snake slowly lowered its head, turned around, and calmly slithered into the dense bushes by the road.

The woman sat there for a long time, unable to believe it had ended that way. Then, with difficulty, she stood up, took her bundle of firewood, and slowly walked home, constantly looking back.

That evening, she barely slept, replaying the moment over and over in her mind.

The next morning, she woke up early, as usual. The house was quiet, only a faint light coming through the window. The woman walked to the door, opened it… and froze.

Right at her doorstep lay snakes.

At first, she thought it was a dream. She blinked, but the image didn’t disappear. There were many of them. Dozens. They lay on the ground, on the steps, along the path, coiled and slowly moving.

The woman stepped back, her heart pounding so hard it was difficult to breathe.

The snakes didn’t attack. They were simply waiting.

Some raised their heads, others barely moved. Their movements were slow, almost like the snake from the day before. And then the woman understood. The drought.

The heat had not eased for days. Water had almost disappeared everywhere. And apparently, the snake she had helped had somehow “told” the others.

Now they had all come here. For water.

The woman slowly looked at her empty bottle, then back at the snakes. And in that moment, she fully realized what her act from the day before had turned into.
