Beloved Florida pastry chef, 71, killed in freak accident with bread-making machine

A well-known and deeply respected pastry chef in South Florida died in a tragic workplace accident after becoming trapped in an industrial bread-mixing machine at the grocery store where he was employed, according to local authorities.
The victim, identified as Mordehay Grunberger, 71, was discovered deceased early Friday morning at the South Florida Kosher Market in North Miami Beach. Police said the incident appears to have been a devastating accident involving a large commercial dough mixer.
The North Miami Beach Police Department confirmed that there were no immediate signs of foul play. Investigators believe Grunberger, a longtime employee of the market, accidentally became lodged in the machine while it was operating.
“At this time, there are no indications of criminal activity,” police said in a statement. “We believe this was a tragic accident involving an industrial dough mixer.”
The grocery store temporarily closed its doors on Friday following the fatal incident, as employees and customers alike struggled to process the sudden loss. Authorities have not released further details regarding the specific circumstances that led to the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Grunberger, who described himself as a head pastry chef on his Facebook profile, was widely known in the local community for his dedication to his craft and his warm personality. Friends and colleagues remembered him as a skilled professional who took pride in his work and treated those around him with kindness and respect.
His wife, Inna Gastman Moar, expressed profound grief in a heartfelt message shared on social media shortly after his death.
“Today, my beloved husband Miki, my closest person in my life, my best friend, and the father of my two beautiful sons, tragically passed away,” she wrote. “I am lost. I love him so much. He is the love of my life.”
Alongside her message, she shared several photographs capturing moments from their life together—something she often did—prompting an outpouring of condolences from friends, family members, and members of the community.
Many who knew Grunberger described him as a man with a generous spirit and a “noble heart.” One friend recalled how he offered unwavering support during difficult times, saying he could always be counted on for love, solidarity, and compassion.
Another tribute read, “He was a wonderful person and a great friend. He will live on in the hearts of everyone whose life he touched, even in the smallest way.”
As the community mourns his sudden passing, Grunberger is remembered not only for his talent in the kitchen, but also for the kindness, friendship, and warmth he shared with those around him.
