Bougainvillea likes to 'eat' this the most, bury it at the base once and the flowers will bloom all over the branches

Bougainvillea Care: Boosting Growth and Flowering with Soybeans

Bougainvillea is a popular ornamental plant, loved for its ease of cultivation, minimal maintenance requirements, and vibrant, long-lasting blooms. Known for its wide range of colors—yellow, red, pink, orange, purple, and more—bougainvillea brings a burst of brightness and charm to any living space. With proper pruning and shaping, the plant can even be trained into arches, trellises, or living flower walls, making it both decorative and versatile.

Seasonal Flowering Patterns

In winter, bougainvillea often produces fewer flowers due to low temperatures, which are unfavorable for its growth cycle. However, as spring approaches, the plant regains its vigor, producing lush foliage and fresh waves of blossoms. To encourage healthier growth and abundant flowering, providing the plant with extra nutrition at the right time is essential.

Using Soybeans to Stimulate Growth

One highly effective and natural method is to fertilize bougainvillea with soybeans. Soybeans are rich in protein, amino acids, calcium, fiber, and lecithin. More importantly, they contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—all crucial for strong roots, lush leaves, and vibrant blooms.

After fermentation, soybeans also release organic acids, fatty acids, amino acids, and small peptide compounds, making them an excellent organic fertilizer for bougainvillea and many other plants.

How to Ferment Soybeans for Fertilizer

  1. Prepare the soybeans: Soak raw soybeans in water until they expand.

  2. Cook the beans: Boil until fully cooked to speed up the fermentation process.

  3. Fermentation process: Place the cooked beans in a sealed container with water and store in a warm environment (around 25°C / 77°F). After about 10 days, the beans will be fully fermented and ready for use.

    • Note: Using raw soybeans is also possible, but fermentation will take longer.

How to Apply Fermented Soybeans

  • Direct application: Bury a small amount of fermented soybeans around the base of the bougainvillea (a safe distance from the roots to prevent root burn). Water as usual, allowing nutrients to gradually release into the soil.

  • Liquid fertilizer: Dilute the fermented soybean solution with clean water and use it to water the plant. This method provides nutrients more quickly and evenly.

Alternative Options: Oilseed Cake Fertilizer

Besides soybeans, gardeners can also use oilseed cake fertilizer—a by-product of vegetable oil production. These compressed cakes, made from the residue of oil-extracted seeds, are nutrient-dense and work well as organic fertilizers. Like soybeans, oilseed cakes should be fermented before use to avoid unpleasant odors and to release nutrients more effectively.

Additional Tips for Healthier Bougainvillea

  • Moderate watering: Bougainvillea thrives in slightly dry conditions. Overwatering may cause root rot and reduce flowering.

  • Plenty of sunlight: This plant needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to bloom well.

  • Pruning: Regular pruning after each blooming cycle encourages new shoots and more flowers.

  • Balanced fertilization: Along with organic fertilizers like soybeans, occasional use of potassium-rich fertilizers will enhance flower color and longevity.
